Sorry it's sideways. That was my Valentine's Day gift. I know it's labelled as a bromeliad, just wasn't sure if there was a specific kind it might be or if I should just keep calling it the purple monster.
    Very pretty .

Purple monster it is (since I failed Latin in school).

thank you again dc, hopefully it'll manage to survive me and my track record of killing off tropicals.

You're most certainly welcome. Just make sure to water it every couple days and it will grow nice for ya.

Hedera helix will be wonderful in a viv. The hypoestes will thrive, depending on humidity. It's a madagascar native, so i'm not sure how it will do in humidity higher than 85%. What kind of species tank is it going in again?

Okay awesome. The tank I'm setting up will be about 70-75 percent humidity. It's an orange eyed crocodile skink tank (:

Because of Valentine's Day, the store my boyfriend works at got a lot of plants in. Not just flowers. I got a big Bromeliad for only $4. However I did not add it to my tank. It's a house plant for me. After I read up on it's life cycle and everything it seemed like it would be a pain to have in there.

I got a thing of assorted plants for $12.

The other day the left over plants had been marked down and I spotted some really pretty plants with big wide leaves. My frogs love sleeping on big leaves. It was green but had various shades of orange in it. I didn't get it though because I didn't know if it was safe. It' called Croton. Does anyone know if it is safe to use with my frogs?

Croton are safe for your frogs. They are hit and miss when it comes to humidity. They normally prefer humidity in the 70's and below and a well draining substrate.

Hi all! so iI started asking related questions on another of my threads but iI kind of want a fast answer so I'm using this one too.
I'm a first timer when it comes to vivs and plant care. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a list of preparations a plant needs from the time it leaves the nursery/shop to the point where you plant it in the viv.
For instance I know perlite is bad news, but don't know what all I need to do to to ensure it's gone. Also what precautions should iI take versus potential fertilizers and insecticides etc that I may have no knowledge about?
    Other considerations?

    Thanks!

...Oh, and how much rinsing does store-bought sphagnum moss need?
It is sitting expanded in a bucket right now, and I used dechlorinated water, but I just poured out a ton of dirty water, and am wondering if it is STERILE dirtiness, or if I need to rinse multiple times or something.

And if I do need to do that, I won't really be able to use (reliably) dechlorinated water, since the sphagnum is all sitting in the bucket I use to dechlorinate the water, so it would be tough for the dechlorination fluid to adequately mix, or at least I am imagining that'd be so.

The only thing i do to plants before planting is rinse the leaves under warm water to remove any debris on them. I don't rinse my roots because i want the plant to have some fertilization while the bio cycle in the tank builds up. Just like my frogs, i try not to stress my plants. As far as the perlite goes, if it's on the roots, it is highly doubtful a frog is going to get that deep into the substrate where there is a chance of them consuming it.

As far as the sphagnum, all you need to do is re-hydrate it. Nothing more

I'm new to plants so got a LOT of reading to do before I get my terrarium set up. Can anyone give me a link to a UK website that sells the plants needed, I don't want to buy from local garden shop as I don't know what they could have been sprayed on them.

I'm going to be keeping D. Auratus

    Bill,
    What is this?
    It never had an id.
I liked it because it looked as though it would crawl along the substrate--- it's doing well planted in that setting.

Very slight fuzz on the leaf---not rubbery
It's sending out little root tendrils at each leaf segment

    question?

I really don't like broms.......I only have them in this enclosure because the pumilios need them to hide tads.
( if I should ever be so graced by them sharing their descendants )

So does this little pup and the roots mean I can remove the support off this 'silly' plant.
