I'm going to get an African Clawed Frog and I plan on feeding mainly live food. What should I feed it and how often? I want a big, healthy, happy frog. Thanks!
In my experience with live foods, Earthworms (Nightcrawlers) are more or less a perfect staple and ACF more or less go crazy for them. I find the ones purchased from WalMart or any bait shop work just fine, just avoid the ones with dyes or enhancements for fishing purposes. You just want plain old regular Canadian Nightcrawlers.
I do recommend washing the worms off before feeding since they're usually dirty critters.
I feed my frogs one Nightcrawler every other day or so (large frogs can probably eat two), depending on the size of the frog and cut them up for smaller frogs, be prepared for a frenzy.. I've had a frog literally perform a small leap out of the water and snatch a worm up (making some rather odd 'slurp' sound). They literally go crazy for earthworms.
Oh, and avoid redwrigglers, they're toxic to most animals and at best tend to emit a rather distasteful 'slime' when threatened. I am willing to wager ACF are too gluttonous to care and would still gulp them down but I've heard that they're not ideal and nightcrawlers work just as well.
