    Default what is this?

It is a bacterial infection. Apply a thin layer of ORIGINAL neosporin to it daily with a new Qtip each time. If you see more spots, apply it to all. Only use original, the other versions are toxic. If it does not start to disappear within a day or two she'll need to go to the vet for other antibiotics.

I would remove the substrate and use paper towel substrate, changed daily until about two weeks after the infection is gone.

    Will you keep me posted?

Be careful to read the exact ingredients in it to be sure it is the same. Some versions of neosporin vary the ingredients slightly. I only ever use the original neosporin brand.

    Default what is this?

It could be caused by a few different things...

Often, stress causes their immune system to weaken and this allows opportunistic infections to sneak in.

It could be from contamination from the substrate, plants, water dish, or human contact, from a stress-induced infection, improper humidity or temperature, insect bites, injuries from plants or tank decor, contamination from other frogs, etc. Any number of things.

It does not necessarily mean you did anything wrong.

The best thing to do is to start a hospital tank. A 10 gallon is fine. Use only paper towel substrate. Be sure to rinse the water dish daily. Use only dechlorinated water or spring water. Cover 3 sides of the tank. Keep the temp around 78 to 80 degrees and the humidity at 70 to 80 %. You will have to cover part of the screen top if its a normal 10 gallon aquarium, to keep the humidity stable. You can turn the tank vertical if you have a way to keep the screen top on. You can even tie it on with two tight ribbons. Use a smooth glass bowl for feedings so there are no crickets to bite at her.

It's a bit pricey for a hospital tank, but I keep on hand a 12x12x18" zoo med for just this purpose.

Be sure to wash your hands and rinse thoroughly before handling her. You can use non-powdered gloves if needed. I use latex-free. Try to minimize handling of her as much as possible.

Keep her in a calm and quiet room. Continue her day/night schedule as you were.

    You can heal her.

Dr.Frye is my vet also and he has helped me heal 5 of my adopted sick frogs. If you are willing to pay for the medicines, she will heal faster than using the neosporin. He had me treat mine with Metronidizole and SSD cream. Mine were very sick and also needed force fed and hydration soaks. I did also heal one frog on neosporin before i met Dr .Frye. They are all doing well.

I'll check back tomorrow to see how she is doing.

If you have other frogs, be careful not to cross-contaminate them. Wash carefully between them.

    Good luck!

    Savannah,
The reason I asked about the lights:
Sometimes a red eyed tree frog will have a normal temporary mottled look to their skin ( I'm emphasizing temporary ) . I have noticed this happens AM and PM when the lighting changes , if they are getting ready to hunt, interaction with another frog etc. You will notice this if you happen to be viewing them during a 'change in color'. ie bright green to dark green or vise versa. The skin color should not remain mottled , however.

When you speak to Dr Frye. Perhaps consider purchasing all or some the the medications he suggested in the link I sent you. Especially the topical medication and the powder to treat parasites. The advantage of this is having it on hand ( creating a medicine cabinet) , therefore, you will never have to wait to treat a problem. This is especially important now that you have more than one frog.

Keep us posted! You caught this right away. Try not to worry.

Yea i know what you mean by the color changing. I've seen her do it before ( i watch her all the time she is fascinating to me ) so i knew i wasn't part of her normal process and since it was still there after a while i figured something was wrong. its still there, it looks inflamed today....kinda like blisters but really small....i put some more ointment on.

what about the plants?? we were going to transfer them to another tank but since she got sick i don't want to risk transferring the bacteria to another tank or to the babies. will the bleach solution take care of it...should i throw them away?? what should i do with them??

Any chance you checked the ingredients in the generic version?

It should start to fade at the edges. Should not get worse.

Try giving Dr. Frye a call and an emailed photo. Being Christmas is coming and their office will likely be closed for the weekend and the holiday, I'd call him today to get the meds in mail today so you can get it by Friday or Saturday.

I would treat the plants with a very mild diluted bleach dip followed by a thorough rinse.

I thought if something gets inflammed i can mean its working and the bodies fighting agianst it, but then agian that prolly for humans and not amphibians.....
ill talk to mom about calling Dr. Frye, we have a good vet locally to if hes out of the office.

The spots will decrease in size and change to a brownish tan scar. They will fall off and the skin underneath will be green, blue, or a faded tan. Continue the neosporin. Is she still eating and pooping?
