A friend is clearing out some 'clutter' and has a couple of tanks to offer, he doesn't know the dimensions at the time he offered them.
A 55 gallon FREE. A 40 gallon FREE, or a 40 gallon octagon with stand and hood $50.
I did a search here for 'octagon' and some old posts came up, the pictures were outdated and didn't open.
I'm planning to start my beginner 'frog adventure' with either Fire Belly toads or Dart Frogs, (group friendly, nothing fragile, but bold, maybe Dendrobates leucomelas ?, still researching)
The octagon tank sounds interesting but according to dimensions I've found, it's 'about' 24x24x24
Seems to have some wasted space for ground/bottom dwelling creatures, but the shape might be interesting for 'humans' visual effect.
My thoughts with the octagon:
An island, ('around' 18"x18") a stump/broms and other plants, surrounded by slow moving cascading pools or completely surrounded by shallow water would be good for Fire Belly toads. All the glass would be open, no background attached to it.
Or 4 sides of background and do a Dart frog viv.
Or 4 sides of background and a small, front, water feature for a FBT viv.
How many "toads" do you think would be happy in this octagon?
How many for a group of PDF in the octagon? Which PDF?
Or just go with a 'standard' tank?
What are your thoughts?
Any pictures?
"Something" tells me I should get all of the tanks!
Thanks!
Do they hold water ?
I think I would take the 55 and the 40 and leave/forget about the 40 gallon octagon w/hood !
Or like you said ---grab all of them.
Lots of options.

Hmmm...
I would of course take all the tanks. I love octagon tanks. I returned one a few years ago that was leaking, but now i'm kicking myself. There are some great examples online of dart frog tanks in the hex/octagon shapes. They really work well for making a tree stump tank for dart frogs. I think D. leucomelas would be great in a tank like that because it has some horizontal but a bunch of vertical space.
So yeah, I say take all of them.
Or give them to me.
Cheers,
Alex
i have a 65 gallon hexagon and i thought it would be the perfect terrarium tank but after delving into a build i found it difficult. its meant to really be a centerpiece viewed from all angles so confining it to a corner really killed the beauty of the tank for me.
the only way i think i would ever try a build with it again would be to leave the walls alone and build from the center up. like a eco/epiweb pillar..
I have a 37 hex with 3 Hyla versicolors in it, love it, only problem I had was making my DIY screen lid, but if you are putting darts in it, a glass top by a local glass company will be no problem. There are a couple of great hex builds on dendroboard
