I'm at a bit of a crossroads here... I have 2 - 40 gallon long tanks, one housing a 4 year old female ABF and the other housing a 4 month old young male. The females enclosure has a 4 gallon pool that I made her, filter and all. However the males tank is an exo terra with the slots on the front, so a pool is impossible.
Now, I got him a HUGE water dish, but it gets very dirty fast and it's very hard to carry/clean.
I've read it is possible to keep them together... As you can see from my profile pic, they've both met and are both very healthy, no signs of anything. They are around the same size, and Big Bertha is a really BIG female, so I don't see them eating each other any time soon. If fed separately, do you think I could keep them together, to cut down on tanks or even use the empty 40 as a "project" tank![]()
I'm not sure what to do here...
i keep my 6 month old female with my 2 month old male and they get along fine
I've heard it can be done. I'm pretty experienced with these frogs, but always thought they couldn't be kept together without risks
I've seen videos and pictures of people housing multiple together and I've heard it can be done as long as they're the same size. I have never owned one so I don't know from experience though, just going by what I've seen/heard.
They're the same size now, but in a year or so that will not be the case.
Or you could always just buy a smaller, lighter water dish. My Rococo is using a huge exo terra thats probably 14 inches long, 4 inches deep and I clean it every day no problem. Or just go tupperware. Light and cheap. Its pretty easy to get creative with the frogs pools using different plastic lids or boxes that obviously werent intended for frogs but get the job done perfectly.
As an experienced frog owner I know you have thought of this as well, but keeping them together will also mean sterilizing the tank at least twice as often, which I personally wouldnt want to do. Sure it means cleaning two tanks instead of one, but there is just something about disturbing their home every second week that feels wrong to me.
I think you should be fine housing them together as long as they are the same size, I've had 3 together for 6 months now and they have no aggression towards each other. I also find the only extra cleaning is that I usually need to change the water every day.

I have to pixies a female and male my male is 8+ inch 800+ grams and my female is 4 1/2 inch and 300 grams i got them both at the same time and have hade them in the same cages ever sence when i got them thay both wear no biger than a haif doller the only time im ever worryed About him hurting hur is durning feeding and even then i dont seperit them so yes it can be done you just have to keep a good eye on them
I guess you can try it and if it doesn't work you can separate them again?
I know they get along, they're been introduced before. I'm just weary of the idea. She's so timid for a ABF...
I got a question for any of you all i read the post's above and i have my bully in a 20 Gal big water dish but i really want to convert it over to a 50/50 my question is how much would it cost me just to convert?
Tim,
It's not too expensive depending on how it's done.
I went and got some glass cut (around $7), a tube of silicone sealant ($4), and a water filter (mine cost about $30, but this varies greatly depending on what you decide on). Totally worth the money.
Plus I put some fake plants in and fixed some rocks to the top of the glass so there wouldn't be a sharp edge for the frog to cut himself on. Really depends on how elaborate you want to make it![]()
Thank you. I'm going to get it done within in a couple months but over all i thought it was going to be more expensive than that.
Cohabitating: They are just fine to keep together. They thrive with tank mates especially as youngsters (I know your's are not really frogletts anymore). I kept 4 together up until recently. I sold my 3 females and kept the male. Feeding time was the only problem time for me. If I did a mass feeding frenzy with crickets or earth worms they would grab each other, but usually it was harmless and didn't lead to any injuries. The key is keeping them well fed, and monitoring during feeding.
50/50 tank. You could do a water feature in your exo terra. It just won't be very deep, which is fine. As far as filtration goes don't mess around with cheap filters. Just get a decent sized cannister to start. I went through three filters before I broke down and bought a good sized cannister. I spent 40 bucks on the first tetra fauna 501, then another 50 on a waterfall filter (used in conjuction with the 501) and still had to change out the filter and water every 3-5 days. Not worth it. I could have bought a nice Marineland to begin with given the money I spent. I ended up getting a Hydor premier 20 for 80 bucks ( I had a coupon for 25 bucks off next purchase so I got it for 55). It works great. It even did a great job when I had all 4 in the same tank.
Final word/2 cents: Put em together with a nice water feature. They are bullfrogs and love the water.
