    Default Water Dispenser Vivarium

Hey, I just got this great new idea! Has anybody here tried using one of those glass lemonade/ water dispensers for a dart frog vivarium? I think it would make clean up a breeze since you could just rinse all the nasty stuff into the drainage layer, and empty it out through the dispenser valve. You could use large pebbles for the drainage layer, and plant various water loving plants like peace lily, or aquatic mint and fern, and top it off with some nice live moss. Some of those containers are made quite large, and might even be able to accommodate some nice suspended tillandsia bromeliads. I was thinking it would be kinda cool to get a really big one and have a small, shallow water pond area with some dollar weed (kinda like a miniature lotus garden). Any thoughts guys?

That is a cool idea. I have seen people turn those into shrimp tank. Mostly for opae ula (?) Shrimp. But they sealed off the spout. I think that is the weak link. If i were going to do one, i would also seal the spout. I would be concerned about debris getting stuck and either clogging it or worse, leaving it stuck open. Drain and fill would be done with 1/4" tubing. You should see some of the cool jars people build terrariums out of, a lot of them could easily house a pair of thumbnails. Especially something like those old fashioned apothecary jars like they store heads in in the old horror flicks. Go for it, let us know how it works out

Cool, do you know where I can find some thumbnails? I have only ever had D. leucomelas, and red eyes. What are some good starter thumbnails?

i wish i could give you a clear cut answer on that one. but i'm a tree frog guy (for now), so i am not real sure. hopefully, one of the dart folk will stop by an answer that one. or you could just plain out ask in the dart threads but the build, THAT i can help on, so let me know if you have any q's

i like that first one, with the stainless steel spigot please. then, Rae's idea is totally do-able. with a stainless steel ball valve spigot like that, i would do exactly how Rae described. i was thinking the one's that have the plastic spring loaded spigots.

Thanks a bunch for the pointers Lynn! That five gallon one would be great for a pair of Ranitomeya Variabilis. I did some research on them yesterday. Turns out they are a great starter species. I've read that they are out going for thumbnails, and that they prefer lots of vertical space. They are also easy to breed and are non-obligate egg feeders which means I can remove the tads and raise them separately (since they are cannibalistic). I also had the great fortune of finding a vendor who sells them in trios for about 65$. Now I just have to save up my pennies so I can get all the supplies.

    Hi,
I have been thinking about you!

I have been searching for a really large dispenser! I found this one ( 5 gallons) sold by william sonoma. I bet it can be found at an outlet? Is this similar to yours?

    Glass Beverage Dispenser | Williams-Sonoma

If you should decide to do this, could you let me know. I have this on my 'to do list'. My other small ( frogless) one is really very pretty. ( I used gravel substrate , no barrier, ABG soil) It has one ( fern) plant and moss growing beautifully. Put it together on a whim!

FYI- I had my -three- recent dart builds drilled for draining ....... 1- 1/2 " off the floor of the viv. The center of the drain hole is just below the level of the hydro. It has turned out to be a worthwhile investment. As the mist king adds water slowly, it drains into a bucket on the floor. I am still fine tuning as the mister is also used for my tree frogs.

Hey Lynn, Thanks for the tip on the dispenser! I just found a 3 gallon one for 34$ on the cheap. It looks like it can hold a few small bromeliads. I'm thinking I can get a small cork tube or some drift wood to run vertically up the center, and drill holes in it to mount the plants. For the drainage layer I'm going to use large polished stones and try to grow live moss over them. I'll probably put some pothos in there too to give them something more to climb and sleep on. I'll also place a few small cork pieces around the bottom to provide lots of good hiding places. I'm going to give this setup a try, and see how the frogs like it. I've decided on D. Imitator. They are only about 3/4 inch, and are more hardy and out going than other thumbnails. I also read they get along pretty well. I'm fixin' to go shopping for all the decor. I'll have to post some pictures once I get it set up. Thanks so much for all the help!

what a great thread i cant wait to see the finished product. when i was in 3-4 grade we build ones like this for a science project (minus the frogs) it worked out great. I've also seen it done inside quarter machine (for candy, toys ect) and those were really cool too.

that's actually ironic, i have been negotiating with a guy on CL who has one of those monster gumball machines i thought would make a really cool viv for Leucs. now, if we can ever come together on price....lol

Alright, well for whatever reason the first pic is sideways :/. Here is the finished product. Rocks are filled up to the metal rim, and I have a TON of life plants in there. There's one miniature Ivy, loads of hollow cork branches, a small tillandsia, several small ferns mounted on the cork, and believe it or not, a whole medium sized bromilliad! I opted for regular spagum moss to cover some of the rocks, since there's just not enough light reaching the bottom to keep moss alive. I went ahead and ordered some frogs from Josh's Frogs. The guys at Zoo Keeper told me they were pretty good about offering healthy frogs. I changed my mind on the D. Imitator, and went for some vents instead. They were cheaper, about 118 for two of them, shipping included. They look a lot like D. Imitator, with a slightly different pattern, and similar colors. They should be here tomorrow morning. I'm super excited! Mom told me they are my early Christmas present. I'll have to post more pictures with the frogs added. Yay! I'm getting my first thumbnails! XD

They have arrived! They are settling nicely into their new home. They seem particularly fond of the bromilliad. From all the pictures I've seen on line, I knew they were small, but these guys are down right tiny! I think they must be froglets. These guys are quick too! I let the first one out near the middle of the vivarium, and before I knew it he was climbing out! I think I'll call him Flash.

wow......looks great, but um, 2 frogs in less than 3 gallons of total volume? that seems to be a bit cramped, don'tcha think? and just out of curiosity, you added ventilation holes in the top, right?
