All my snakes are garters. Last time one of them grabbed me, I freaked out because I turned around to find my snake's face covered in blood; hadn't even felt the bite. Calmed down once I realized it was mineTrevor is on the other end of that spectrum; even if she just gets you with her tongue, it's like a tiny little battering ram hit your hand.
Garters actually do have venom, but it can't do much more than just make your hand/arm swell up. It's just that it's released from the Duvernoy's gland at the back of their mouth. They can't get it into your system unless they get you with the rear-pointing fangs at the back of the jaw and chew to work it in. Of course, they have to actually think you're food for that to happen. Never goes that far with a defensive bite.
