    Default And One More Question.....

One thing from the vet that I forgot because it wasn't really relevent to my frog's issue, at least I think it wasn't relevent..... The vet said these guys can grow too fast and their structure and internal organs may have trouble keeping up. Anyone hear of this before? He said mine might be growing too fast when I told him I had him about 3 weeks/1month and he had been the size of a quarter. He said to cut back on the amount of food I was feeding. Was this just a nice way of saying he thinks my frog is fat? I think he looks pretty normal for his size. (pics are on my original thread about the bump on his leg and in my profile.)

I promise I'm done with the questions, for today at least!

Well I've never heard of this, but it is possible. If you are feeding daily go ahead and offer food every other day. Still should be fine.

 oh I remember when i had 100000 question a day
now let's think... frogs in nature have to grow fast or will be eaten, although they probably are not eating like we feed them in enclosures and they actually need to work for their food, so growth rate should be slower then in captivity, but in captivity we provide regular supplements to offset rapid growth.
I'm looking at it as analog with children, you feed them junk food, they will be overweight, internal organs and bones wont be able to keep up, similar with any other animal and frog, you feed them junk ( wax worms and pinkies) they will be overweight and all consecutive problems will appear.
so i doubt what you were told is true, but definitely feeding every second day won't hurt it.

Thanks to both of you! I've had pacmans before, but there was NEVER the info available on them that there is now. I just want to give this guy the best chance I can since there is such a great place to ask here. Love this forum!

Ask me anything about Bearded Dragons if needed, I can help there! Frogs, still learning!

+1 on still learning.....when I'm done learning I should be dead....if not shoot me for the sake of others.

OK, here's my two cents on this growth issue. Lija as usual brings forth a great point by looking at what they do/tolerate in nature. My only conjecture is with WHAT we are feeding. This is my worry with the pac man food. Not trying to open a can of worms (or ash and veggie matter...yes, pun intended). But this stuff grows frogs FAST! Right? I don't think for a minute that it will kill your frog, but for the reasons brought to light by the OP, it is highly likely to significantly shorten your frogs life. Whole prey (what they would eat in nature) may not grow them as fast as pacman food, but I can report that your ceratophris will still grow very quickly. Its natural for them to do so in the wild. They have to beat the dry season and be large enough and have enough stored fat to last months for their first brumation period.

Not sure what you are feeding, but if its whole prey items as a staple (not mice, they can be detrimental as well if you over do it) then I would not worry about cutting back. Stick with moderation........but never in principal (sorry, the last part is a George Orwell reference...not frog related)

    Thanks

therefore the variety of good nutritional food items is a key!
in terms of pac food, i do think it needs to be in combination with other food items, not to be the main food item.
problem with pac food that there is not enough data to make any conclusions really, especially long term. It looks like it makes frogs grow fast, but genetics is a factor here too, so what is having more influence, pac food or may be genetics or may be both, environment factors such as husbandry will play certain role here.
