A couple questions about white-lipped tree frogs

I should be getting a white-lipped tree frog soon, and I had some questions.

• Depending on how expensive they are, I may be getting either one or a pair. From what I've heard a 30 gallon, vertically oriented tank should do the trick, but would this size be good for a pair as well?
• I've been reading books, and there are some conflicting opinions about proper substrate. Is a standard rainforest substrate better (natural looking, keeps humidity up, but possible impaction risk) or is a simple paper towel substrate better (simple & easy to clean, but also a pain to replace all the time)? Or is really just a matter of personal preference?
• Interestingly enough I'm also hearing conflicting opinions about their behavior. Are they very active during the night, or are they not very active, even at all hours?

I don't personally know much about white-lipped tree frogs, but I think I can answer some of your questions.

I really suggest getting a pair. It's fun to watch frogs interact with each other and you're pretty likely to get different personalities. My two WTFs are complete opposites so it makes for some interesting moments. And they enjoy croaking together. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe they have similar habitat requirements? If that's the case, I highly recommend a tall exo-terra 18x18x24. It's a great size.

Eco earth is a good substrate to use. It's ground up coco husk that is small enough so there isn't an impaction risk. This way you can also have real plants. They help with humidity and add a more natural look. My frogs really seem to like their live plants. If you create a false bottom for your habitat you'll be able to plant the plants directly in the substrate and the cleaning is minimal. There are some great links in the vivarium forum.

And I honestly have no idea about their behavior, but I'm sure there are good videos on youtube to give you a good idea of their behavior.

I've never kept white lipped tree frogs, but I do know they get very big - even bigger than Whites, so a 30 vert is perhaps the minimum size for a pair. Go larger if possible. They do have similar habitat preferences as Whites, but behaviorally tend to be more skittish - so more cover maybe advisable. Agree with Michelle on the live plants and false bottom. Check some of the sticky threads under the vivariums discussion part of this forum for lots more information. Paper towels are easier to clean, but not if you want live plants. Otherwise, the substrate cover can be anything from moss to leaf litter, and will not be an impaction risk if you don't let their prey run around in the tank and instead, use a bowl to feed them.
