My frog is sluggish and can’t keep himself afloat. I found him lying on his back and he is still alive, but can’t flip himself over onto his stomach, so he scoots along the bottom on his back. His chest looks larger than normal, but doesn’t look like he’s bloated- he’s very skinny. I have a small tank with room temperature water and I have another ADF who is perfectly healthy. Does anyone know what could be wrong with him and how to help him?
When frogs flip over and unable to right themselves is a sign of possible nerve damage, bacterial or viral infection. Make sure you separate the frogs as mentioned by Grif. I am not sure if there is anything you can do![]()

Hello and welcome to FF Ethan! I'm sorry your frog is sick but piggybacking on an old thread won't get you much responses and could even result in confused advice. Please look at these questions and answer them the best you can after describing your frog edema problem in a new thread on this section. Thank you!
1. Size of enclosure
2. # of inhabitants - specifically other frogs and size differences
4. Water Temperature
5. Water - type, pH, etc.
6. Substrate
7. Tank set up i.e. plants (live or artificial), decor, and other materials.
- How were things prepared prior to being put into the tank.
8. Main food source
9. Vitamins and calcium? (how often)
10. Lighting
11. What is being used to maintain the temperature of the enclosure
12. When is the last time he/she ate
13. Have you found poop lately
14. A pic would be helpful including frog and enclosure (any including cell phone pic is fine)
15. How old is the frog
16. How long have you owned him/her
18. Frog food- how often and if it is diverse, what other feeders are used as treats
20. Is the tank kept in a high or low traffic area
21. Describe tank maintenance (water changes, cleaning, etc)
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
