Im not sure if they do this or not but my little frog is, well, i think he is yawning .. im not sure. Do they actually yawn?
They open and close their mouth when they are shedding. It looks like yawning, but it's how they pull the skin to their mouth and they eat it. Yummy right?
LOL. It's normal. They shed all the time.

Yup, they do it quite often, especially when they're growing. You really don't need to do anything, just watch or leave him in peace, heh. I don't think it will effect it's appetite at all and I have never seen one go to the bathroom and shed simultaneously, but that doesn't mean they can't. I don't know an exact time it takes them to shed, since I've never sat there and watched from start to finish. I don't think it would take much longer than half an hour to shed though.
What she said.
Well.....I would never eat my own skin/scabs/toenail clippings?....LOL

Pluke, tell me about the frog in your avatar. What is it, and where'd you get it?

Okay well, he is just sitting on the substrate now, not even burrowing. I guess he is alright. He only ate 2 crickets today. Probably full on shed lol.
Do they have a scientific name or they just considered Cranwelli? Are there samurai ornatas annd Cranwelli versions?

Thanks
DW
He's just a cranwelli. Though there are samurai ornates as well, mikesfrogs avatar is a samurai ornate I believe.![]()
Next time he randomly wanders out of his burrow watch him for a bit and see if you can watch him shed its an interesting process to watch
2.0 Bombina orientalis
1.0 Bufo americanus
0.1.1 Ceratophrys cranwelli
0.1 Xenopus laevis
All my arachnids and other inverts listed in my profile
Nah, they only do this for shedding from what I know. In the wild they have a way of attracting prey and by doing that they sit still and kind of wave their arm around. I've heard of them doing it in captivity but I've never seen it.
There's no real connection between shedding and hunger. I suppose if a pac was severely stressed, that could throw off their normal shed schedule and cause them to shed more or less than normal... But generally, they don't have anything to do with each otherYou probably just haven't noticed him doing it other times, or it could be coincidence.
It's really strange looking. There are several youtube videos of it. I saw one where the frog was toe-wiggling to attract a dead pinkie. Needless to say, that didn't work out like he'd hoped it would.
Hi guys!![]()
Yep, he's definitely shedding. They can shed more or less often depending on the humidity and their growth period. They grow fast as juveniles so they shed often. They will open their mouths wide to losses the skin. They will roll their bellies and push the skin forward with their back legs. They'll wiggle some more and pull it forward and off and into their mouths. It actually has a decent amount of protein and is good for them to eat. I rinse my babies off when they are shedding so they do not each much substrate, though it is best to let him do his thing and not bother him so he is not stressed. Mine are more than used to me.
Here are some pics of my big girl shedding. Sorry they are a bit dark.
I love when they shed. It's so neat. And I love how their colors are so bright after a fresh shed.
