    Unhappy Help! Frog has worms

Hi! I have three Whites tree frogs and two days ago I saw that in the water dish there were white worms in Shnookles poo. He seems to be eating and acting preitty normal. I am using coco husk for the bedding and the tank size is ten gallons. He has lots of room to climb, lots of things to climb on, filtered water, and plants. I keep the temp around 75% and humidity around 80%. The worms were thin, white worms about 3/4" long.

go to the vet for medications asap, it is definitely not too late, don't worry, a few doses of meds will solve your problem fast and keep in mind you will need to give meds to all frogs in the enclosure.
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!

    Default Help! Frog has worms

Yes, They are correct. You'll need to get some deworming medication from the vet, likely Panacur. As Lija noted, all frogs in the enclosure will need treated, or they will keep infecting one another.

Remove the substrate and wipe down the floor. Use paper towels as flooring/substrate and change daily. Be sure to dechlorinate your water too. Be sure to change the water bowl water every day.

Most worms can be treated within 4 weeks with a weekly Panacur treatment. Most vets will want a stool/feces specimen. Get a fresh poo and place it in a new baggie for the vet to test.

Dewormer is the only way to rid of worms. Unfortunately they will not go away by themselves. If your local vet cannot help, (I'd call them first to check), then there is a vet in Michigan that likely will. Please let me know. If you need his contact number I will give it to you.

Good luck and please keep us updated.

It is very important to follow all the suggestion that have been a made.
Be sure to follow Heather's instructions regarding setting up a 'hospital' type set-up until you have clean fecal tests (poop without worms)
The vet will help you determine this.
Wear gloves when changing the substrate and water dishes --- wash your hands well........before and after.

If you should need it, here is the link to information for Dr Frye that Heather mentioned.

How long have you had your frogs?
Do you have any other pets?

    BTW- welcome to Frog Forum

Hi, guys! I just set up Shnookles hospital tank and I put fresh filtered water in his water dish. He is sleeping in it right now. Last night I put him in the herb called Cats Claw for about 2 minutes. It worked for my frog, Blueberry, who had a prolapse. I don't have access to an exotic vet right now. Anyway, I will keep you updated. Thanks!

Hmmm, I've never used that before. I would recommend calling Dr.Frye and shipping him a feces sample. He will send the necessary medication to you in the mail.

I don't actually think fecal exam is needed, what you described sounds like pinworms, you don't need exotic vet to get meds, same panacur is used for all round worms in other animals, any clinic will have it, you need to know the weight of a frog and they just need to calculate a proper dosage that they can easily check on spec vet website
you seem to miss the point that not only Shnookles but the other 2 have to treated as well, if they live together they all will have worms even if you don't see them.
Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!

    Listen...please
Froggirl13; you have 3 beautiful frogs
An email to Dr Frye will cost you nothing.
After discussing all of this with him via email, he may or may not even want a fecal sample( since you think you saw 'worms')
Describe all of this to him in the email. Provide photos of ALL three frogs.
A fecal sample is his decision. You may sent him a fecal and it could be negative!
The Panacur and a fecal sample will cost you all of about 30$.
His office makes the hole transaction very easy with a credit card.

It's easy to find panacur on line.
Then you have to buy ,ship it, purchase a scale and be absolutely certain you have calculated the dose properly for your little ? 14 gram frog???
I have 19 frogs. I have given panacur several times .. under a vets direction each and every time.
Being an RN , I know exactly how to do this ....but would not would not w/out help.
I know exactly how to tell you to do this ....but would not.
We should respect the fact that we did not got to veterinary school.
When you own frogs these thing WILL come up. One needs a plan.
It is my opinion one should have these medicines and other emergency supplies in a 'froggy' medicine cabinet at all times.
You could get done with all of this and they could pick up another parasite ( down the road) from a feeder ! So being prepared is very important.

If you email Dr Frye this AM you will have an answer to you problem today ! Done
Sadly, The alternative is not pretty! If fact, he may suggest an antibiotic as well?

Many frogs end up needing a de-worming treatment. The frogs enclosure has to be broken down, sterilized, a hospital tank(s) must be used during the treatment. This could take 3 months to finally cure all 3 frogs, depending on the parasite. We would all like to think our frogs are ,or were, in a parasite free place, but this is not typically the case.

I hope the information in these posts sends you in the right direction.
It's quite simple--- there is a right and wrong way to take care of this properly.

I would say if you see worms, why waste time with a fecal sample? Just identify them if you need to drop off a sample of worms at a vet's office to identify the type and call stores that are likely to carry medication. A vet tech could identify them. I would try and find a med locally by calling...waiting to have it shipped in the mail easily could be too late. But, that's what I would do. I'd also remove frogs from tank and wash everything, hot water, add vinegar and rinse well. No bleach or soap. Just a thought......

Yeah, I read about it, maybe you have to get them from a vet. But, how would this be given? By mouth?

Hi, Hoppity100! the probiotics that I give my frogs are really for people but they can also work on frogs. You can give it to them if they stop eating, or if they start to lose weight. Use one capsule and Soak your frog for about 2-3 minutes in about two cups (half litre) of filtered water. You can buy the probiotics at any health food store or CO-OP.

Hi, guys! update on my frog. Today I'm going to give my frog some probiotics to help get his tummy back in balance. Shnookles still seems to be a little bloated. I am keeping my other two frogs in another tank and they have not had any contact with Shnookles. I'm treating him with probiotics right now and I will keep you updated. Thanks!

Just wanted to mention that probiotics will not treat worms. I'm very glad you have decided to seek vet treatment .
