Feeder options for fire-belly toads?

I haven't gotten my toads yet, but I am still wondering on what to feed them. I've read over and over about how crickets smell, so those are my last option. My mom freaked out when I asked her about keeping a roach colony, so I can't use those either. Can I use d. hydei fruit flies or nightcrawlers as a staple? If so, then can anyone give me care for those feeders?

Hi! My frog hates crickets, so I feed her waxworms and mealworms available @ Petsmart or Petco P.S. hope this helps!

Fruit flies will be too small for the frogs. Mealworms are a no-no because they are not very nutritional and their shell is hard and the frogs are not able to digest it. Waxworms are very fatty and have no nutritional value. Nightcrawlers are very nutritional and would be a great staple food but tend to be very big. They can be cut to about 1" pieces and tong fed to the frogs. Silkworms are also a great feeder but will have to be ordered online. Crickets, even though they smell, should be part of the diet. They should be gut-loaded. You can use orange slices, carrot slices, potato slices, romaine lettuce, apple slices, etc. The healthier your feeders, the healthier your toads will be! Isopods, like roly polys are also good. You can feed hornworms and butterworms as treats sparingly.

and mine love to slurp down whole earthworms and waxworms every now and then

I rotate between wax worms, mealworms, nightcrawlers (they usually refuse) and crickets. I won't give mine roaches, don't need any impactions. But, I would offer mine something else except our stores are limited. No one sells anything but worms and crickets. And I check the containers first because most contain dead worms. Wish flies were easier to house....

Mealworms are more of an impaction risk than roaches.
