Default Tips for Managing Pests and Parasites

I have found with most fish tanks at least, (first time with frogs), it is much easier to prevent pests and parasites than it is to take care of them once you have them. I am planning a group dart enclosure with live plants and a waterfall. Probably D. Leucomelas or Auratus. I am imagining later full sanitation to be nearly impossible without an entire rebuild. This is a 75g in-wall setup, so thats gonna be a horrible job.

Should I fecal test each frog before adding to the viv? Do you quarantine or clean plants? How?
Do you sanitize everything you put in there first? Substrate, rocks, wood, gravel, etc?

    Hi,

Should I fecal test each frog before adding to the viv?

    Quarentine is very important!
Separate quarantine for each dart is important if they have come from 2 different batches or parents. A quarantine setup should not a bare, sterile box. This can cause stress and cause illness in-itself. Provide cover, proper temps, hides, water and plenty of food. Don't ration food but don't put so many ff in that it upset the frogs. They should also be away from active areas of the house during this time to help acclimation and reduce stress. In fact some will say, quarantine tanks should be kept in a different room. If you choose to do fecals- I think the rule is three clean fecals at least 5-7 days apart. You could email Dr Frye.

It is just as important not cross contaminate, use other equipment for those enclosures and practice good hygiene between enclosures . ie I regularly use powder less gloves when maintaining 5 enclosures, changing gloves before entering each. A real good hand scrubbing will do the same. Dispose of all cleaning materials and poop in a way in which it is not sitting in a near by waste basket. I use cheap plastic bags from cosco-- clean a tank- and dispose of the paper towel and gloves in the bag---then knot the bag before moving to the next tank. Works for me!

YES, yes and yes ! you should, always, sterilize.
Do a FF search --there are lots of threads regarding this using bleach and water, baking and /or boiling depending on the item.
