I would put them in some soil.
Agreed, woodchips like that are really really dangerous for these frogs.
If one of them accidentally swallows a piece of that, even once, you're going to have some major complications.
They are very good looking frogs though, Mike.![]()
Its cypress mulch. Its called forest floor at petco or petsmart. They won't swallow it. I tong feed them and the chips don't stick to anything.
They will go back on coco when they are ready for sleepy time. The cypress won't let them burrow themselves down.
Thats how you do it lol sweet frogs bro
I think you would know better, Mike. Woodchips are dangerous. Why pose the hazard? In the second pic it looks like there is a small piece stuck to that rat. Also, that substrate would be awfully uncomfortable for a frog with the sharp edges of the wood poking them and whatnot. I hope you change it ASAP.
They are doing good on it. I've never had frogs die of impaction. The tank will be cleaned out next week and they will go back on foam.

Thats quite possibly the worst substrate you could use. I feel sorry for those frogs.
Sweet looking frogs Mike! But I do have to agree with everyone. Even if they don't eat any of the bedding, the softer Eco earth bedding will be much more comfortable and safer on their skin. If they do swallow it though, they will run into some major issues passing it.
And when they do burrow they usually just dig a crater and lay in it, lol not completely burry like pac's can (although they do burry themselves completely from time to time)
Sorry for the lecture Mike, calling it as I see it.... :/
I can't use coco fiber down here. Anytime my frogs poop or spit out pacman food the fruit flies lay eggs in it and I end up having worms in the substrate. Not good.
The girls are on foam currently.
I am curious to know if anyone has seen what they are on in the wild? I have never had any problems with impactions with frogs eating any substrates. Plus these are wc females and are not as aggressive to eat as cb pyxies.

are they forsure females? the one with the white spots looks a bit male to me lol
They also have to contend with predators, drought and starvation in the wild.......if you're going to go "natural" then don't half-*** it and just use a dangerous substrate on the basis of them encountering similar things in the wild. That kind of logic is counterproductive to what a keeper's primary goal should be: providing a safe environment for their captives that allows them to thrive.
The amount of frogs I have now has no bearing on my awareness of what is and isn't a good idea......I have kept my fair share of frogs, and I'm not speaking on matters I am not familiar with. Its not about quantity......its about quality, contrary to popular belief.
Yes habeeb they are both females. They are from philippe de v.
David I'm going to ignore most of what you said. You didn't bother to read the previous post of mine saying they are currently being kept on foam just like my other frogs.
I keep all my animals on substrates that work for me. I have had thousands of frogs and have had no issues with impaction.
McDonald's churns out millions of burgers every week as well.....that doesn't mean its the healthiest food out there, either.
Again......quality, not quantity. I'm not a "Pokemon" type keeper so I don't care how many you have.....when you post negligent husbandry practices, don't get upset when people call you out on it.
All i can do is laugh at you.........
If you would pay attention to the fact that ive had 1000s of frogs with no problems with impaction........ You would figure that the substrates I keep my animals on caus no harm to them.
You can have your own opinion on what substrates you believe is best. You call pacman frogs Pokemon? Thats pretty funny.

Wohhh alright guys its time to simmer down a bit...
Beardo, mike is a very respected breeder/member on this forum, and he's right, his methods work for him and with the sheer number of frogs he has I can't blame how he keeps them to make it easier on him.
Mike, there's no need to be this confrontational, you're both clearly set on your ways, and both methods seem to work.
