As of late I have never dusted my crickets with calcium, and likely never will. I feed my frogs variety. I alternate bi-weekly with fish and mice, weekly with hornworms, and my frogs staple is nightcrawlers. Crickets are as rare for me to feed as mice for others. On average, maybe once every 3 weeks. I believe this works well, and all my frogs have had amazing growth rates and no health issues. I guess my question is that since I still have an entire shaker of calcium powder left, is it safe to use it or should I just chuck it? Keep in mind fish and mice are very high in calcium (I think) and my frogs would eat a couple mice and a few fish every month.
And by mice I mean pinkie and fuzzy mice. Only my Rococo eats hoppers and rare adults because she is an 8 inch godzilla.
I would still dust at least once a week since I don't think they absorb a lot of the calcium anyways. I am not an expert though so I will wait for someone more knowledgeable to chime in![]()
Yes, it is safe to use still. Pinkies and fuzzies don't have as much calcium as you might think. Their bones aren't fully developed. I'm not sure how much calcium the fish have. It probably varies by species. These frogs need a lot of calcium to develop properly. Even with your varied diet, supplementing with calcium once or twice a week should help. Pacs can develop calcium deficiencies at any point, not just when they are babies/juveniles.
Thanks guys. Thats the answer I want to hear. I spent money on the stuff, might as well use it. I just know almost everything is toxic in large doses, so I wanted to be sure.
I have fish-eating snakes, and the bones in fish (silversides?) are enough that you don't need to supplement if they're fed on a regular basis. However, I don't believe they have so much calcium that dusting the in-between food would hurt.
