All I know 100% is that I want a toad.
Currently I'm trying to choose between these-
1. Duttaphrynus melanostictus (Asian Spiny Toad)
2. Bufo alvarius (Colorado River Toad)
3. Bufo marinus (Cane Toad)
4. Bufo regularis (Egyptian Toad)
If anyone has owned any of these species, can you please tell me about them?
#1 I'm interested in because I think they're very attractive. I am getting varied information on their size and living requirements though.
#2 Hard to come by, expensive, large. But- pretty, hardy and unique.
#3 Seem to be common and inexpensive. But they are very large and I hear they are super shy.
#4 Don't really know much about them, but it's more of a looks factor. Also haven't seen them with any reputable dealers.
I'd have to say the one I want most is the Asian Spiny toad, but I'm getting a ton of mixed info on them. Plus all available specimens are WC. Which brings me to another question. Where do ya'll get your parasite medication from? I hear Panacur covers most things.
(notice, these photos are not mine, nor am I claiming them to be. They were found in a Google images search under "Asian Spiny Toad" )
I see "supposed" CB Colorado River toads for sale sometimes.. I think I've seen them 2 times since July on faunaclassifieds, who's to say that they aren't lying though. I don't know where you could get parasite medications from, but I'm sure somebody here will tell you. If I were you, I'd just be patient and wait until you find a toad that just feels right and get that toad. I think there are a few species you should add to that list, too.
Other toads that are really cool are the Smooth Sided Toad Smooth-Sided Toads fed crickets - YouTube which I tend to see somewhat often on Kingsnake and I've seen them at reptile shows, too. Another really cool toad is the Couch's Spadefoot Toad. I just find them awesome looking. Amphibian - Toad: Couch's Spadefoot Toad - YouTube There was some on Kingsnake for like $10 a piece the other day.. they're gone now though. Then there is also the big Rococo toad like Maharg has. I've seen these for sale like 3 times, twice in person and once online.
There are three different adds for Colorado River Toads on Kingsnake right now, so I suppose if you wanted one of those nows your chance. Kingsnake.com Classifieds > Toad Classifieds That's if you decide that's what you want, I see them for sale fairly often, tbh. I've never seen an Egyptian toad for sale, let alone heard of one until the other day when you were talking about them. Cane's are super common, but I've heard they are shy too. Don't know much about the Asian, but I see them rarely for sale.
One of the coolest toads I've ever seen is of course one that I don't even think is in the U.S. Market, 脱皮ä¸* - YouTube and 脱皮ä¸* - YouTube I just love those videos.. those toads are so cool. I know if I ever saw one of those for sale I'd be forced to get it.. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that will happen.
Sorry if this wasn't very helpful, haha. I just wanted to point out some other cool toads that I think are worth considering if you see them.
Edit: I just made the AND between the two links bigger so they weren't seen as one big link.
I'm beginning to think that both Cane and Colorado River toads would be larger than I would like.
Realllllly set on the Asian Spiny Toad. I guess I'll just have to hold out.
And I looked into those couches spadefoot toads, and after reading awhile, I learned they do not make very good captives. They do have beautiful colors though.
And I'm liking the look of those smooth sided toads. They have the whole "puppy dog eyes" thing going on
Whatever the frog/toad is in that last video is, is stunning. I've never seen anything like that before. Very beautiful! Do you know the species?
It's Bufo Japonicus. Japanese native species, really wish they'd become available. If you find any let me know, lol.
Yeah, the smooth sided toads are awesome and they get big, but not too big I don't THINK. They actually remind me of my tomato frogs when they were babies.. but giant. Heh.
I LOVE the forearms on them! They look like they've been lifting weights, or like some cartoon rendition of a toad.
Anyways, I don't want something that's going to eat me out of house and home, since I've got a growing baby pixie already.
Looked at Rococos and they're gorgeous and I like their personalities, but it'd be too expensive for me to feed one.
Eqyptian toads are wonderful, very hardy - just like American toads and with beautiful yellow/green colorings. They also enjoy living in similiar conditions. I'd suggest them to any novice toad'er. I've found them at trade shows before and will only run you $10-$20 bucks. Pick up two if you can.
Stay away from Cane Toads, very skiddish. From what I've seen Roccco's are less so, but yeah.. they are eating machines.
Found Bufo japonicus, Pluke.
Says they have only been out of stock since October 26th, so maybe they'll be getting in more soon. If they are, I know what I'm getting.
Japanese toads-Various sizes- $16.99
Cool.. I don't know how trustworthy that site is, but if you do give it a shot and you get one let me know. How did you even find that site? Searches never seem to bring up sites like that for me. -_-
Pluke,
I was bored at work, and typed "buy toads" into Google, and found that site, and just browsed through their inventory. They also have Chinese Giant Toads (really not all that big) which are fairly similar in appearance.
I've been reading up on the site and they are drop shippers, but I haven't found anything really good or really bad. I read a thread in the FaunaClassifieds BOI and someone said "it was simply a transaction. not great or terrible."
The guy who owns it has several other sites like it but with difference focuses.
I've got Panacur on hand for whatever kind of toad I end up getting, so I guess at this point, WC isn't too much of a concern.
If they ever get back in stock, I will probably get 2 or three to house in a 50 gallon rubbermaid type tote.
I've never had a problem with cane toads being skittish, but then again I've never kept them in any transparent tanks or dealt with them in a "pet" capacity. My only complaint about them is they're obnoxiously difficult to anesthetize.
Bad Guy Reptiles N Critters - FaunaClassifieds Look at the links within the thread too.
After doing a little searching on faunaclassifieds it seems there is a lot more negative than positive, I wouldn't take my chances I know that. I'd rather put up a wanted add or something on Fauna.
Where did you get your Panacur? Can you use the same stuff they use on cats/dogs on your frogs?
Ah okay.... damnit!
I got it on amazon. It's the powder kind. And as far as I know you can. You just dust their food with it once or twice a week.
emily please dont buy from fauna classifieds my brother bought 6 big eyes from a breeder on there and when he got them they were deid the guy forgot to put air holes in the tub they were in i have yet to meet any one that has had a truly good experiance from there
Kira...I don't know where you gathered that I was buying from FaunaClassifieds. They have a BOI section and that is what was being discussed.
I'm sorry about your brothers experience with whomever he purchased from. Was there a live arrival guarantee? If a breeder/seller didn't offer that, I doubt I'd buy from them.
sorryi miss read

You can't let one person ruin a whole site for you. Faunaclassifieds is great and there are a lot of good people there as well as bad, you just have to do your research on the person you might buy from. I hope your brother made a bad guy thread on Fauna to tell everyone how terrible the seller was.
Definitely Bufo alvarius. Well worth the money. I'm gonna try to breed mine, but I have one that I'll sell for $80. Really expensive, I know...
Rococo, Rococo, ROCOCO. Lol best animal ive ever owned. But you're right, also the most expensive. I dropped $160 to purchase her, and lately 8$ a day to feed her. But today I just ordered in 500 Nightcrawlers at $100. Ill try my best to stretch that out for a month, which would be nice because thatd bring my feeding cost average down to about $3.30 a day for her.
