    Default Alligators for sale... WTF?

    Alligator for Sale

Precisely how does one care for a friggin gator? Do you fence off your yard and let him roam free? Do you feed him a diet of stray cats and dogs? The website has a legal disclaimer but not really any safety warnings such as "he MAY try and eat you."

True American alligators are actually quite docile...they are hard to keep but really only because of the size of pond you need and the filtration needed for it granted they wouldn't be for everyone but I have a friend that keeps them not to difficult when you live in their natural habitats lol

They used to sell those guys at a pet store near where I live. I always wondered the same sort of things. These animals are not at all "tame-able" like most reptiles. At least one wouldn't think so. It seems far too dangerous for the average joe to ignorantly choose as a pet.

I don't doubt that. Although it's possible that some pet stores will sell smaller gator/croc. species like dwarf caiman.

I use to keep them. They are actually really easy. Once they get over 4 ft it becomes a two person job to move them. Other than that as long as you don't play with them and be dumb they won't hurt you. I think baby gators cost me around $25.00.
Hey Mike, I believe gator/croc/caiman are illegal in California so perhaps you grew up in another state?

    Namio,

It was a long time ago, but I remember it vividly because my mother made a pretty big scene over how they were being kept.
100% sure it was American alligators.

I agree they are not fit everyone but of crocodilians the American alligator is one of the most docile (not tame docile)

For the right person, an alligator can be a rewarding species to keep. Problem is, too many idiots get a hold of these creatures and soon enough become overwhelmed and the animal suffers for it. People like that give the entire herp keeping community a bad rep....

in the 90s they were still legal along with the baby crocs. I had them in another state. Had venomous also. That's why I said I have kept alligators before.

California could make a lot of money through permits and allowing people to keep exotic animals here like they do in other states. Ofcourse you would have to weed out the idiots but that's not hard.

With any dangerous animal the larger the area the better.

Well I live in a duplex... so small yards. Would be an awesome deterrent though. Instead of "Beware of Dogs" it would be "Beware of Gators." NOBODY is breaking into that house unless they're packing automatic weapons and lots of ammo.

    Best line in the add:

    Sexing Your Alligator
Please feel free to request a male or female alligator (or any combination thereof) when you order, but please be aware that we cannot guarantee the sex. However, we can guarantee that someone very experienced with amphibians will attempt to select the specific alligator(s) you are requesting.

I sure am glad someone that knows about amphibians is going to take a guess. I was worried they would use a bird expert!
