I got my Fantasy Pacman about 3 weeks ago and will be doing a substrate change soon but ive noticed she doesnt move AT ALL. The water dish is always completely untouched. I keep the humidity very high as a result of Calgarys extremely dry weather. I mist the tank maybe 4 times a day and humidity is always around 80. Im assuming this is the reason the water dish isnt touched but not only that, Ive noticed she hasnt moved once. At all. So does this mean I should be picking her up and moving the pile of fecal matter that must be under her often? Id imagine is must be a festering mess under her by the end of evey week.
I know shes healthy. She always eats voraciously and is always perked up awaiting her next meal.
I know this is quite natural but as a result should owners of completely inactive Pacmans be very diligent about removing the waste below them or will the standard monthy substrate change suffice?
Most healthy Pacman Frogs only go about once a week depending on age. Babies and juveniles sometimes will go daily to every other day. How often they go gradually lessons as they age until they only go once a week to every 2 weeks. This also depends on how much they're Fed and how often. It wouldn't hurt to move her and check once a week just incase.
Many will stay in their favorite spot for quite some time and not move. Others will leave and choose another burrow often. They usually don't like to sit in their own waste so most will change burrow after having soiled the spot they're in.
It your substrate is nice and moist as well as ambient air humidity being ideal your frog will not use the water dish very often. Although many will use it for the sole purpose of a toilet. You can set your frog in its water dish so that it knows that it has a water source if needs be and most likely your frog will either use it as a toilet or get in the dish after soiling its burrow. My frogs usually soil their burrow and then proceed to through a huge fit until I remove the waste, soak in their dish using it as a toilet, or soil their burrow and just get in the water dish afterwards like washing themselves.
All individual Pacs are different with different habits and preferences.
If you can, please look at your little ones feet especially the front ones. Do you think she is having any difficulty moving because for example her leg is broken? Or her legs are too small for her body? Do they look brittle or fragile looking?
How many times a week do you feed her calcium dusted food? Do you feed your frog vitamins?
Your tank sounds fine to me. If you can please take a picture of him or her so we can get a good look at her legs just incase it is a physical issue. She sounds healthy though since she is eating and happy to eat. She isn't having bowel issues because she is defecating.
Please always check for feces underneath her daily because that can be toxic because she will reabsorb it into her blood stream. Keep us posted!
Yup I agree 100% with Grif.. I have one frog that has never gone in his water bowl on his own and sits in the exact same spot unless prompted to move by me, which I do whenever he's fed. He has never pooped in his tank because he only goes when placed in some lukewarm water which I do every 1-2 weeks depending on how much he eats.
My albino on the other hand poops where he sits and then moves straight to his water bowl and wanders until I remove it, heh.
My frog is definitely healthy. Ill be changing the substrate tonight and seeing what kind of horror may be under her tonight. I know my younger Pacman goes every day, and my Rococo Toad multiple times a day, so if only once a week or so is normal for an adult pacman, that would be luxurious.
She doesnt get dusted crickets, only because A) she is pretty much full grown and B) she gets tonnes of variety in her diet. Gut loaded crix, nightcrawlers, hornworms, fish and occasional mice. I dont believe dusting is required under these circumstances, and have read a lot to back it up.
But ill add that its not so much the feces that worries me, but the ammonia build up from urine.
