Hello
I have a xenopus muelleri that has an eye infection as it is all swollen and is pink. he is still eating fine but his colouration isnt too good either. He is housed with a female.
What treatments can I use in the tank? Is Myxazin ok to use on frogs or is it harmful to them? the man at the pet shop wasnt very useful but he thought this would be the safest option but I need to make sure.
Should I quarinine him from the female as she is healthy and I dont want 2 sick frogs?
Many Thanks
Gemma
I would quarantine him for sure. You should call a vet and ask about the med. It is hard to say without not knowing the exact problem/cause.
Welcome to the forum by the way Gemma.
I agree with Tony. You need to place the frog in a hospital tank. The hospital tank should have about an inch of water and you will need to change the water at least twice a day. Always make sure the temperature of the new water is the same as the water in the tank. You will need to consult a vet. There is a basic treatment you can try: teramycin is safe to use as long as you follow these instructions carefully. Take one teramycin capsule (the kind you get for tropical fish. Open the capsule and thoroughly stir in 1/4 cup of distilled water. Using an eye dropper, place 2 drops of the solution in the eye. Repeat for at least 8 days. After the eye is clear have the frog remain in the hospital tank for another week to make sure the infection is gone.
Please note, I am not a vet. Frogs do not always respond to treatment. Good luck!

thanks Terry, how big is a hospital tank? - ive already seperated him into another tank with clean water but its quite a big tank. how do i get distilled water? sorry for the stupid questions.

I would say a 5 gallon? It would be easier to change the water in a smaller tank. You should be able to purchase distilled water at a grocery store. Here they are sold in gallon jugs. I hope your baby gets better soon! Good luck!
As Sherry said here in North America distilled water can be bought at the grocery store. If your frog is an adult I would use a 10 gallon aquarium, but a 5 gallon would be OK for a froglette.
he is an adult but due to the species he is only about 1.5 inches long.
