What type of frog is Rocco? That worm didn't have a chance in the world! Rocco was wayyy too hungry - I never seen a frog use it's hands to hold a worm and it almost looked like he was keeping the worm in place with his hands. Very cute!
Rocco is a Rococo toad. Perfect name.I thought, although Rocco is a she lol. Couldn't resist. She does that with all prey that doesn't go down instantly. I feed her mice as treats occasionally and she does the same thing with the tail lol. And she is always that hungry. Her appetite is insane. If people think Pacmans or pixies are monstrous eaters, I can guarantee they have NOTHING on Rococo Toads.
I wish my toads could eat worms. They try so hard but can never get their tongue to stick. I end up removing the worm. My bullfrogs, on the other hand, do just fine. I know they've succeeded when I hear a loud "pop" from the worm getting bit.
I think she's cleaning debris off the worm. Cool toad!
Thanks! Yea ive heard of a lot of Toads not being able to catch Worms. The first worm was tough for her but she always keeps trying and I think has the technique down pat now. I think of you leave the worm in a while the toad will eventually get the right smack of the tounge to pull it in. She kind of hooks it it underneath. A few Bufo Toads have even learned to eat carrion so I would let the toad try a while longer with the worm. Toads are extremely smart. And Worms are extremely nutritionally valuable.
Also, I did this for a bit of a show. Rocco has a worm rock in her tank. One smack and gone without fail every time. Just place a medium sized flat rock in the tank and place the worm on it. This makes the worm infinitely easier to catch, at least for Rocco. If this still doesnt work, elevate half the rock by digging under it slightly and dangle the worm off the rock
The bottom half is slightly dug under. This will help a lot. Rocco just polished off 10 in 5 minutes off of it
Thinking about revising my toad setup right now to have several areas to burrow into substrate and lots of flat(ish) land, instead of just deep substrate everywhere. There's only 4 places I've ever seen them dig, and 3 of them are in hides. More "flat" area also means I can put dubia and waxworms in unsupervised without worrying about them burrowing.
