Hi everyone!
So I've had my two baby White's tree frogs for about a month now. They seem to be doing well so far. They've adjusted to their terrarium and are relatively active (I usually don't stay up late enough to watch them).
I just have one problem that I'm trying to deal with. Keahi is very obviously the dominant frog. She was slightly bigger when I first got them, and now she's huge, compared to little La'i. Keahi is filling out nicely, her body and limbs are not as skinny as when I got her. La'i, on the other hand, doesn't look like she has grown at all really. I took both of them out today to inspect a little, and La'i is still just as skinny as when I got her. I'm pretty sure that she is eating though, because the corner where she always hang out frequently has baby-sized poops for me to clean up. She's a lot more shy than Keahi and I've never seen her far away from her corner, even though I don't watch them at night.
My plan was to feed Keahi seperately in a smaller critter keeper the next time I feed them, and then I can count the crickets in the enclosure and see if La'i is in fact eating.
My question is, if this is a good idea, or if it will be too stressful for Keahi. Also, if La'i eats more alone, should I do this frequently, or can I count on them to figure it out by themselves? I asked the store where I got them, and they said that it's natural for one to eat more than the other, but I don't really feel good about it.
Thanks!
Renee
P.S. here are some pictures.

You don't need to remove the frogs to feed them separately if you don't want to stress them by moving them everyday.. Hand or tong feed them. I feed all 4 of mine by tongs that way I know they are all getting equal amounts. But yes makng sure both are getting enough is very important and if the larger is more dominant there is a good chance that the smaller isn't getting as much or is getting stressed by the other at feeding.
Hi,
I personally hand feed my white's (I wear gloves because I can't stand touching crickets with my bare hands).
I have found this to be a great way to monitor his food intake and making sure he is getting his vits and calcium. Then I let a couple roam his tank so he can catch on his own...
I feel that removing forgs for every feeding, into a separate container, stresses them out and causes them to eat less.
I feed my red-eye with a glass bowl. I put the dusted crickets in a glass bow (about 3" diameter and 3" tall) at the bottom of her tank. I've found that this is the best way to feed her and monitor her food intake. You could try this with your white's, but unless you can actually see the smaller one eating, it's still hard to know what he's eating....
I've heard tongs work great also, but the only time I used tongs to feed my white's, he lunged so hard on the tongs, I was afraid of injuring him, so that is why I hand feed. Also, I would use the glass bowl with my white's, but he just doesn't seem to get it!

that last comment gave me an image of a whites trying to dive into the side of a glass bowl repeatedly seeing the crickets inside not knowing to climb in... I tried not to laugh I really did lol
One of my whites just did this! I broke their kidney bowl cleaning it and used a clear glass bowl, she was so mad she kept lunging but not getting a cricket!
Anyway...You don't have to take them out of the tank to feed them. What I find works is if you put crickets in a bowl the dominate one will jump right in and eat. While he is distracted you can tong feed the other one.

I'm coming in on this a bit late but oh well :P. What I like to do with my white's is to use a deep (4") tupperware bowl. I put it right inside the tank with the crickets in it and either make sure he's up high so he can jump down in or I put him in it gently. This doesn't seem to stress him at all. You could just get two small bowls that will both fit in the tank and put each frog in a bowl so that you know that they both are getting food and not having to compete. And yes, as Bolisnide said, I let one or two roam so he can catch them on his own too. I think it's good to encourage hunting behavior!
