Humidity queries

Hi, As I'm still new to froggie keeping I have a humidity related question...

I'm using the ExoTerra Combination Digital Thermo-Hygrometer - the instructions are 'vague' other than the obvious "central location away from heating and lighting".

The available animal caresheets usually give a temperature and humidity range.

Q. Where's the best location for the sensor? If the frogs are 'ground' dwellers my thoughts are at that level, whereas for arboreals I'd suggest in the foliage, is this correct? What else should I be considering?

That's a good question. I always wondered that too. I personally keep mine mid tank to just a bit lower. This way it's far enough away from both the light and the repti-fogger.

Sasha is right. For terrestrial frogs, place it about an inch or two above the substrate level. For arboreal, place it at the level they most reside, along their plant mid to tops.

I have more questions – here’s one.



Tomorrow I will populate my 4th terrarium with 2 x juvenile Golden Mantella [Mantella aurantiaca]. Because of their size ~10mm they are eating springtails, pinhead crickets and melanogaster fruitflies. To eliminate handling and to get them quickly acclimatized I wish to feed them in their new home rather than in a ‘feeding box’. They will be housed in a 30cm x 30cm x 45cm [height] Exo Terra terrarium.

From my limited experience I know that even 'giant' fruit flies will escape these terrariums so does anyone have any suggestions on 'fly-proofing' - I'm setting up my final 5 terrariums, most of which are to house dart frogs, so unless I'm careful I'll be in the market for spiders!!

Yes, cover your screen lid with a nylon if possible. Works great. That is what I did when I raised toad tadpoles. Post this question in the dart section also. There may be other ideas as well .
