Talking Leptopelis uluguruensis! My Dream Frog!

I found some of these for sale again and had to snap them up even if they were on the expensive side! Yes they are wild caught imports. As far as I know, no one has ever bred them in captivity. I am getting a male and female pair. Never hurt to try for captive babies right? Even if they don't breed (which I highly doubt they will) I am just so happy to have them. They should be here on Tuesday so I thought I should warn you for pictures galore! I just wish I had more money so I could have gotten four frogs instead of two.

I like this species too, as I do most of the frogs from Africa! The top photo is a male, note the sky blue throat. They are named for the Uluguru Mountains in south central Tanzania. It is a medium sized treefrog (42 mm males, 59 mm females).

In their native Africa, during the dry season they often are found in a comatose condition sitting on a large leaf on a tree at an edge of a stream. Their legs placed under their body and eyes closed.

I'm a little peeved as they are supposed to be a pair. However I've read males have blue throats other places too and it appears both my frogs are male. The place I got them is sold out so no chance of an exchange. Anyone have a female they'd like to get rid of let me know lol.

Here they are sleeping. It's kind of funny. As soon as the sun starts coming up around 5:00am (it's still dark outside to me) they fall asleep.

I'll try to get pictures of both of their throats. One has a darker throat than the other (the more mottled looking one). The blue goes all the way down to his chest. The greener one has blue just around the jaw line and it's not as dark as the other frogs.

It's hard to get pictures of these guys because they like to jump onto my camera lol.

It's a terrible picture. But I think you can see what I mean by one frog having more blue than the other. Though I think they are both male.

I don't know but I don't think they do from what I've read. Nowhere really mentions much about the females other than they are bigger than the males. They all make note of the males having a blue throat.

That sucks. Do you think someone might have some for sale in the near future or are these guys really rare?

They are imported from Tanzania and for a while there were no imports. I was surprised to see them available recently. They tend to be sold mostly in late summer early fall. I made an add on fauna looking for females. I know another importer with some, however I haven't been able to get a hold of him via email. I'll try calling tomorrow to see if he will be willing to try and pick out some females for me. Most importers wont if they don't already know how to sex the animal. But it never hurt to ask.

Well since I think there has every been one documented case of anyone breeding these guys in captivity and I don't think that was in the USA, I highly doubt that I will get them to breed at all lol. But heck maybe I could be the second documented case. My plan is to make their viv as much like their natural home as possible and simulate the weather too by looking up the forecast in Tanzania.

Those frogs are really cool, Ashley. Good luck on your quest finding a female. Hopefully you'll end up breeding these some day. I wanna see your viv for them when it's complete. :P

I received some more frogs yesterday. I actually got some females! I asked for 4 females and 2 males if they could sex that many females. But instead I got 3 females and 3 males. Not bad at all! One of the males did look a lot like a female until he brightened up last night. The blue throats seem to really become visible at night time.

Here are some pictures I took this morning while they were settling down to sleep.

    Large Female

    Small Yellow Spotted Female

    Female with Yellow Speckled Male

    Yellow and Brown Mottled Male

    Yellow Male Camouflaged

First Male I Received Sleeping on a Leaf

Those are some really cool frogs. The second and third pic are awesome. Hopefully you have some success in breeding them now that you have some pairs.
