I dont know about the brand you're using, but I use Prime. It can be used at several times the recommended concentration without becoming harmful, so accidentally putting one too many drops in a gallon won't hurt anything. This is mostly for when it's being used in aquariums in case there's a major toxicity problem that needs to be taken care of immediately, but it gives you a nice buffer zone when you're using it to purify drinking water for your other reptiles. I imagine other brands might be similar in that aspect.
You can culture dubia in a plastic tub. My culture is in a, hmm maybe 10 gallon plastic sterilite tub. I have it in a small walk in closet where i keep my a small freezer where i store frozen rodents. Works real well since the ambient temp in the walk in stays in the upper 80s. I too keep my pac in my snake room. Basically the same ambience as you listed earlier. My frog buddy is doing real good with that set up. Initially I had my enclosure too dry and he nearly went into frog hybernation. I added some water and hes doing real good. Don't forget your new frog is going to need his food dusted with calcium powder and vit d3 and some multi vitimins. Its important to provided ample calcium to help their bones grow. Theres a good pac man care guide somewhere on this site. Im not gonna give you grief as other may cause you obviously are trying to do whats right. Everyone makes mistakes and some people are just more pasionate than the next. You can get some water declorinator at petsmart or petco. I think mine actually has some calcium in it. Just 2 drops in each 8 ounces of water. Gotta use it if your putting tap water into the eco earth or you can use bottled spring water. Dont use distilled water cause it will suck the salts out of your frog. Keep looking for answers and try not to take to heart peoples responses that may come off as aggressive sounding.
If I've added more, is that harmful to my frog? I added like a squirt or two to a gallon I made up last night. I just don't want to overdo it if it'll hurt him (it). Btw, my frog pooped!! Never in my life have I been so happy to see a turd. haha.I'm sure that he pooped anyway; it was dark brown and looked like a slug, but more the size of one of his sides. Found it when I swapped out his substrate.
Maybe he just has some big bowl movements? He also weighs 19 grams; is that a good weight? I'll be posting pictures of my set-up later just to make sure I've got the essentials (and no moss). Thanks for your help again!
Thank you very much bud! If only I had a walk-in closet. haha. I have the calcium dust and I picked up the dechlorinater from Walmart for $3, so I made a gallon of that plus some to keep in the room for the squirt bottle and to do water changes with. I blossomed the Eco Earth with only distilled water this time around and didn't let it get soggy, so that I can mist him and give him the option to choose wet or dry (per the care sheet you speak of). I won't take anything to heart as I'm just learning how to care for him properly and I know that many people have differences in opinions and what not. Thank you for the words of encouragement.![]()
You cannot use distilled water for the substrate. IT MUST BE SATURATED BY DE-CHLORINATED WATER OR PURE SPRING WATER. Distilled water has no mineral or salt content and will leach them from the frog which will make it sick. I told you to use DE-CHLORINATED WATER. Distilled is only for misting and fog machines.
If you did indeed use distilled water to expand and moisten the substrate you will have to change it again and use DE-CHLORINATED WATER.
19 grams is good for a froglet. How large is your frog SVL(Snout to Vent Length)?
Haha, my apologies Grif. I did NOT use distilled as I had said. I failed to proof-read my post prior to hitting Post Quick Reply. I used de-chlorinated water from my gallon jug that I had made up. Why I typed distilled, I'll never know. Sometimes it happens when I multitask. I can't come up with a better reason than that. Oh well. In either case, his substrate, water dish, and misting bottle are all now de-chlorinated.
I didn't take a measurement of SVL while he was out as I just wanted to let him soak (which he did while on the scale). I really hate to stress out my animals continuously like I have this little guy. Do they get puffy sides when they have to have a bowl movement? One side looks considerably smaller now. How often should I soak him in luke-warm de-chlorinated water?<-- Got it right that time.
PS: When should I resume feeding him?
All good then. The right side will usually feel firm and stick out a little more when they are nearing a bowel movement. They inflate themselves to appear more threatening say if they feel annoyed by being handled or dug up. Most of the time its and empty threat, but there are some that warn you and follow up with a good bite. Babies and younger juvenile's bite isn't anything to worry about, BUT large juveniles and adults are a different story. They can drawl blood and the bite can be quite painful so watch your fingers.
keep me posted on the bloated appearance because Toxing Out Syndrome starts off with some bloating and lethargy. I'm sure your frog is fine, but just incase keep an eye on him. You should be able to start feeding him again.
Thank you Grif! He may still need to have another bowl movement then. Yeah, I noticed him inflating when I first brought him home and went to put him in his tank. It's kind of funny. But once he was in his tank with the 4 crickets, I couldn't tell if he was making himself that big when I entered the room or what. Now I think that he's just gotta pass the "crickets." Haha, my little guy tried to nab my fingers when I first put him in his tank. It was funny but I knew that I didn't want to take a bite, even if he's small. He doesn't appear lethargic as he actively seeks food at night. Throughout this week he's been active. I'll keep an eye on him for sure. Should I soak him again in a week?
Once you get your husbandry correct I suggest letting nature take its course. Also if your handling it with your hands make sure your hands are washed with mild soap and completely rinsed. Also its a good idea, that ive read somewhere on this site or in a book..., to make sure your hands are wet. Also, not sure if your changing substrate every time you find poop? I think you can just take out the poop. I like drop his turds in a small container with water and give it a swirl n see if theres anything in there that shouldnt be. Keep up the good work.
All husbandry is correct now. It's pooped twice for me but is still thick in the sides and wasn't when I got it. I use non-laytex gloves when having to handle him. I don't want to take the chance. I take his turds out when I see them...like tonight when I went to feed him only to realize that he was pooping at the same time he was going after the worm. Haha. I removed the worm for a minute, let him poop, and then fed him the worm. He's not shy of tongs, so that's a great thing. I have both plastic and metal tongs, but the metal ones seem to hold the worms better, so I'm currently using those with care. I read about the frog biting down on the metal and injuring itself, so I make sure that the worms are hanging off when he nabs them. I'll be finding a dubia supplier here soon.
As for his "fluffiness", should I only feed him every other day or every day? I'm worried that I'll be the cause of impaction. :/
In the pac man care sheet it says that juveniles can be fed 5-7 times a week. Earthworms will not make him impacted so dont worry about that. I do want to add one more thing- When I make my dechlorinated water I let the jugs sit out overnight to give the chlorine time to leach out. I make several at a time so I always have dechlorinated water on hand. I hope this helps!
