    I've had G. portentosa live a few years and remain fertile close to death... The average expectancy seems to be around 2-3 but they can live a little longer depending on the individual and their care. The Elliptohina species seem to be a little shorter lived than their Madagascaran cousins.

    I love hissers! I'm guilty of keeping my colony going partially just because I think they're cute. Mine breed easily without a heat source, but once I do warm the room up and offer them an abundance of fresh fruits/veggies their numbers just seem to take off. I always get a good laugh when I hear hissing while I'm at the computer - I've always assumed it was the males sparring.
