This is my first post and first vivarium (paludarium?) It will be for 3 or 4 Fire Belly Toads. It's a 20 long, with a little over 1/2 water and the rest land. I still have to add rocks to the water side, but wanted to see what you guys thought about the setup over all. The moss on top is in sheets; I plan to get some moss to grow in it's place that won't spread so much. ![]()
It is a lovely set up. The only things I can think to suggest is perhaps a ramp of rocks/gravel into the water to allow an easier exit from water to land. Also You may want to find a way to cover the edge of the divider.
Thanks! I just made a ramp with more rocks, but do you have suggestions on what materials/how to cover the divider?
Hm that I am not sure of. Maybe just build up the land to allow the moss to cover the edge maybe.
Or perhaps some rubber tubing split up the middle and line the top of the divider just so it isn't such a drastic edge for the toads to walk over.
I don't have a split like that in my tank, though had I planned better in advance during set up I think I would have gone that route.
hi im no expert thats a great looking tank but from my resurch i have discovered that fbts dont like it when the water they have is to deep they like to rest there hind legs on the botom of the tank and poke there pretty lil noses out but other than that bet they be in froggy paradise lol
I suggest putting some plants in the water so the frogs have something to hold onto while they're over there. They love water and will probably spend most of their time in there. They'll be a lot happier to have something to hold while hanging out in it
You've gotten some great ideas ^ .
A ramp or plant at the divider in the water side for them to climb out is needed. If you add more rocks to lessen the water depth a bit and add a plant or two or large rock for them to rest on in the water side, they'll love it.
You may want to use the glass bowl trick for meals so the crickets don't drown themselves, so they don't hide in the moss, and so the toads don't accidentally eat the moss. They hop and climb well. You could even have a recessed, small bowl so you don't notice it's appearance much. Just a thought.
Great job!![]()

Hi again! Thanks everyone for your good advice! I went to Repticon Baltimore and picked up the little guys. Only one seller had them so I didn't have too much choice; they're a little skinny but I'll fatten them up soonI added some plants and moss, a log in the water for them to sit on, and some more rocks. They toads are so cute

Cute! Looks good. They should like it. Be sure your lid is weighted or secured, they are great climbers.

A few more picsgot the shelves at bed, bath and beyond and it fits well. I put a desk lamp up so I could see and soon found all of them basking under it.

I haven't had time to get a clear bowl, so I've been using this one. Three of them don't like it but James has quickly learned that this is where the food goes. Today he ate like a pig and sat there staring at me for another ten minutes. More please?? These guys are so cute, much more than I expected.
That is a great pic! He is adorable!![]()
