    Default New 40g Breeder Ideas..

So finally I am moving my three ACF to a 40g breeder which should be a nice upgrade from their current 20g set up which they are starting to out grow..

The tank is about 17 inches high and L 36 x W 18 .. I was thinking about going no top though but keeping the water levels relatively low (maybe 13" deep). The reason for this is because I planned on having plants (anubias) growing "out" of the water attached to driftwood.

I am trying to go for a biotope tank and I believe anubias is native to the natural habitat of these frogs also anubias is a marsh/bog plant which I heard actually grows much better when not completely submerged so I am hoping for nice growth on those plants.

My real concern is the frogs jumping out of the tank without a cover. I've had my 20g with and without a lid and not had any problems but I know they are very capable of jumping out so I do keep a lid on it since I keep the water level in that tank pretty close to the top with 1" for breathing space.

Does anyone think that any clawed frog on earth could leap out of a tank when the water depth is kept 13" in a 17" tall aquarium? I honestly would put a glass lid on top but one of my driftwood pieces stands so tall it actually is taller than the tanks height.

I will take pictures when I can.

Love the set up. I would always expect the impossible where the frogs are concerned. I had one that got out when the water was 3" down and there was a top on with a small opening. I have also seen then jump several inches in a 5 gallon bucket. Granted the water was only 4" deep in the bucket so they could use the bottom as a hard surface to jump from.
If you have anything hard near the surface of the water like plants or filters and heaters you may increase the risk of escape. My favorite frog was recently missing for more than 24 hours and I was heart broken.

Well it's been a little over two months since this tank was established. I thought I'd follow up with my progress. It certainly took a drastic change from my original concept but it's grown in quite nicely and I am very happy with this tank!

I think the frogs are too!!!

Agreed! Love the jungle in there too. Any thoughts of adding to your army some day?

I've considered getting a fourth frog but it's just really hard to find a frog big enough to not get eaten by my current three! I've raised all these frogs from tiny froglets, that's all they appear to sell around here.

My other tank is a 20g but it has a school of cardinal tetras in it, so the temperature of that tank wouldn't work since I keep that tank at ~78F. I may need to get a 10g for a 'grow out' tank, I suppose.

This is my albino bought 5/18/12.. this is how they sell them -- tiny!

They are mostly frogletts for sale here too. I got lucky a while back and adopted 3 from a couple that took good care of them, but was moving. I occasionally see them in the online local ads. You could just hold out for an adult that way.

I think with a 40B and an Ehiem 2217 I could probably keep 5 or 6 frogs in that tank?

5 for sure. I have 6 with the same surface area, but more volume. I have seen people do 5 in a 40B.

Rachael has 7 in her 40B: My Personal Page
