I am new to the forum and also new to even the idea of keeping frogs. I have always loved frogs and since childhood have always been the one picking up and watching the tree frogs every chance i got. (i live in S FL where tree frogs and many tropical animals, etc (and thats a big etcare abundant. Keeping an anole or frog as a weekend guest in some homemade container of sorts was lots of fun, but they always went back in the yard when i started feeling they were "homesick.". I, until recently, never imagined that people kept and cared for frogs with the same zeal and love that i knew people did with so many other reptiles. It has simply amazed me reading your stories and experience. The care and time to recreate a suitable and caring habitat for these creatures whose own real one in our world is shrinking daily is wonderful on many levels.
Here's though a question that this post stemmed from. We were in petco about a month ago and for the first time i noticed some frogs (apparently they have been there all along). I sat and watched a pair of baby australian whites sleeping and couldnt take my eyes off of them. They also had firebellied toads. My partner and our daughter came over with a terrarium (apparently had just purchased) for me as a surprise. Its an exoterra 18x18x24. Since then i have been researching and learning and I am set on a RETF (our daughter's fav) and a black eyed one since one alone seems kinda a waste and they should be fine together if the same size from what i've read and been told.
But the blue eyed post made me wonder...the petco has australian baby whites (one of the two after a month of me watching them is now gone) and from what i read here they are the blue phase ones? The girl in the store told me two wks ago that baby blue Eyed ones were coming. I said to her "the ones that skin can change to a bluish?" and she said "no blue eyes". So are there not just whites blue phase but separate blue eyed type? Is that what the previous poster has? Very confusing, other than petco the few stores that sell call all dumpys, whites, etc the same thing interchangeably when i ask and thats obviously not the case. Anybody know and can clear this up for me its driving me crazy![]()
Blue phase is not the same as Blue eyed. Blue phase talks about there skin tone is usually blueish, aqua, turqoise, etc... So just look at there eyes to see if they are blue eyed as well XD. You'd be suprised how many pet stores are clueless about some creatures. Even some Vets from the stories I have heard on here... its scary seeing that we trust these people with the health of our frogs
Ok, the babys'at petco have black eyes. Are the blue phase ones primarily "Australian" (the sign there says australian baby whites). and can the "blue eyed" be ones that arent blue phase at all also? If the babies they get that the girl told me are coming in look like that blue eyed previous post i might be tempted to take home the baby thats been so sad in that tiny cold tank and then get him/her a friend when the blue eyed ones come in and abandon the Retf for this tank, but that would surely mean a second terrarium eventually. My daughter's heart is set on my office looking like Rainforest Cafe.
From what I have read here and been told here and by reptile stored... Blue phase are Australian... not Indonesian. Australians can still be green and brown as well. Indonesians can only be the green and brown. I know very little about how to get blue eyed whites... if the are strictly from Australian whites line or both.
