Hi guys I have a giant male Pyxie Frog and have heard many different opinions on how much and how often to feed him mice. If you want to check him out you can look at my photo album on here or some feeding on youtube. Also curious if feeder anoles is a possibility as a staple.
Thanks,

Feeding anoles is at best a horrible idea. First they are little bit on the expensive side to be considered as a regular food source. Second, all anoles in the pet trade are wild caught and as such, will most likely have gastrointestinal parasites that would only be transfered to your frog.
Oh ok thanks for the tip I wont do that anymore then. I have fed him two in the pastand he loved them but he loves anything that moves. I've finally made the decision to only feed him a rodent once a month. Crickets and worms are his staples but he is getting sick of night crawlers any other recommendations for worms or insects to liven up his diet? He is not too much of a tong feeder any more either I have noticed
Skip the rodents. Once a month or every other month might be ok, its still more than I would feed. If you need additional food items for your frog, you can try roaches, superworms, waxworms, silkwrms and so on. The more variety you feed the better.
thanks thats exactly what I needed to know. Is there any other store bought insects besides roaches that are healthier than crickets. Or should I just stick with dusting them with the powder twice a week.
Keep on dusting and try to feed other insects from time to time.
You could feed your pixie roaches, There better then crickets There bigger and better for them. You can feed your pixie a rodent once a week.
Once a week is too often for feed rodents to these frogs. As the care article states, use a good staple food such as earthworms or cockroaches, and occasionally give other foods. I haven't fed a rodent to my Pyxies since about June 2009, and even then it was maybe once every 2-3 months.

I can't remember the last time I fed a rodent to one of my toads (rococo and Colorado River). I did buy some horned worms tonight, that should get them all excited.
in the wild theses guys eat mice and rats everyday. Theses guys are built to eat mice and it doesnt hurt them. I heard earth worms are posion to theses frogs. i never gave my pixie earth worms. I just feed him crickets, roaches and a fuzzy every week to two weeks. and hes just fine. I showed him to a breeder and he says its one of the healthy pixies he seen. so i must be doing something right.
Mammal tissue is harder to breakdown then insect. (Ever try digesting a bone?)

Well a factor to consider too is the high dosage of Vitamin A that will be ingested. This is a fat soluble vitamin and as such can accumulate easily (and failly quickly) in an animal, especially if it is on the fatter side. Thus a viscous circle can occur, feed the rats/mice, that are high in fat/calories, which causes the frog to become fat, which more fat = more vitamin A absorbed. High Vitamin A can lead to corneal damage leading to blindness, act as a competitive inhibitor of vitamin D in its role for Calcium deposition. This then leads to possible bone degradation, jaw malformation and curvature of the spine. Ya stick to rodents as a treat once in a awhile (maybe a couple times a year) and ya I agree with John. In the wild these frogs would not be consuming rodents on a regular basis. It's just a nice treat when they do grab one :-).
