Red face OOPS! We Guessed Wrong!

We got two Caatingas about a month ago. We were really hoping for a pair. Although they were the same size when we got them, one of them (Mycena) almost immediately took off in growth and is about 3/4 of an inch bigger. It seemed pretty likely. Well, the last couple days there have been some discruntled noises coming from "her" enclosure. But it kind of sounded more like their angry hissing noise, although it was weird that every time we heard it we were never near the enclosure. I was hoping that the Caatingas are just more vocal. Denial! Last night there was no denying! We heard a call that didn't sound like any of our other males. I peeked into Mycena's enclosure and this is what I saw!

So there is no denying that Mycena is a boy!!!

Well, that's kind of unbfortunate if you were hoping for breeding.
It's still a beautiful frog, though. Maybe you could save up for a proven female.

That other one might be a girl. No one sells proven females of this species. I have only seen 2 adults for sale in the last 3 years and they were all boys.

Still just as amazing as before. You need to get a video up of these guys. There aren't very many good video's of Caatingas.

I don't think shopping is the answer! We seem to have a real knack for picking boys! If we are right about the youngest two, then we have 7 males and 2 females. Lol its getting noisy here!

Thanks! He is definitely a looker! I love his bright color and his horns. You're right, there arent many videos or even that many pictures of the Joaz. I will try to get a video of them eating. I don't have a video camera but my camera does shoot videos, not the greatest quality. They do seem to be more active than the Cranwellis or Ornates. At least mine are.

That tends to be an issue if I plan on breeding them in the future. Ill just coax a female off of you

HE is gorgeous! My two Caatingas seem to be growing about the same rate, although one was a bit smaller than the other.

It's more that I have one growing at a normal rate and one at an excellerated rate! I guess Mycena is just an early bloomer.

No video yet, but here are a few snap shots of my Joaz:

Luciferin has darkened so much that he is almost black except for those neon green stripes. I love it! His back legs are green too. It cracks me up every time I see those little green legs sticking out from his chubby dark belly!

Dude, they're both so awesome.. I love the green stripes on Luc and the Myc's facial features really stand out. So when you say "He" does that mean that Luc is male too?

Thanks! They are quite the characters. And I never get tired of looking at those colors!

We think Luc is male, but of course it is hard to be certain. We were hoping for a pair... but it doesn't look like it's going to turn out that way. Luc seems to be maturing at a normal rate, but Mycena matured very quickly. That is the youngest we have had one start calling. It would be odd for the smaller of the two to turn out to be female. Not impossible, but kind of unlikely. I don't mind whether they are male or female. They are still gorgeous frogs!

It is also really cool that each species seems to have different calls. It's hard to describe, but their calls sound different. My Cranwellis don't sound like my Ornate and my joaz doesn't sound like any of the others. I can almost always tell which one is calling right away.

Save one animal and it doesn't change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal!

I can never get over how stunning he is! Every time I look into his enclosure I still can't believe my eyes. I really wanted a dark Joaz; that's why I picked him. But we had no idea he would get so dark. I can't wait to see how he will look when he is full grown!

He is named after the chemical substance "luciferin" which causes bioluminescence. It seemed fitting since he practically glows!!
