Ok, if you want to skip straight to the pictures the short version is: I adopted a Pac who was being kept in poor conditions.
Long version: Lately I have been buying my feeders and supplies from Jack's Pets which is a tri-state chain. I have been going to the location by my work because they seem to have better conditions than certain national chains who we won't mention. I went in to buy worms this week and I walked back to look at the amphiban/reptile section. I saw this poor little horned frog in a dried out enclosure. I was surprised because usually they keep their animals better. I mentioned to an employee that they need more humidity but she gave me the "yeah, whatever" response. So I went home and talked it over with Jerrod. We decided that if he was still there when I got off work the next day we would get him. Well, he was still there but he looked much drier and worse off. I immediately asked to speak to a manager. The manager there is very nice. She always asks about my frogs and wants to see pictures of them... Well as calmly as I could (I was pretty pissed off) pointed out the conditions. To make the story shorter, they are about to move locations next week and she had been at the new store all week getting it ready and had just gotten in right before I did. The employees left in charge had obviously neglected the herps. As soon as the manager walked back, she said that all of the herps were dried out not just the Pacman's. She was just as mad as me. I know some of you are thinking that she was just covering her own butt, but given my previous dealings with her and at this store I am inclined to believe her. After she saw how bad off they were, she personally took the time to spray all the enclosures and change all of their water dishes. Let's face it; not a lot of managers would do that.
The poor little horned frog was so dried out that he was trying to aestivate even though he is too young to safely do that. the enclosure was completely dried out. There were at least a dozen dead crickets and some dried out feces. Here are the pictures took at the store: if you look closely you can see the epithelial cocoon beginning to form around him.
I got him home as quickly as I could and immediately gave him a warm de-chlorinated soak with pedialyte and Repta-aid. Happily, he started to perk up as soon as he got in the water. And he shed the sac. When he did, these amazing colors started showing!
He's doing great now! He has eaten every night since we got him and shows no signs of any health problems. So please welcome the newest addition to our frog family!!
