Hey all my juvie pixie has been acting a little weird within the last week he looks great but i noticed when i put some crickets in he would go for one and his tongue would hang out and it would not go back in so he backs up to the corner of the tank and it slowly goes back in his mouth this is the second time it happened and after that he would not eat his food. It sure is worrying me since when i got him he was an eating machine I dont know can anyone help me out i tried youtube google nothing has worked and is he sick???
Have you been using calcium, d3, and vitamin powders? Sometimes frogs can lose control of their tongues if they are vitamin deficient.
I use Tetrafauna ReptoCal for all reptiles including calcium and vitamin D3 what other vitamins should i use? and do you think that is the problem?
If you're providing calcium & vitamins as directed that's probably not the issue. I dunno what it could be, hopefully someone else can provide some insight.
Hmmmm
Thanks griff honestly you ah the best guy to get answers from, now would you think it would be anything else? i just really like this guy today i am going to petco cause they have a sale and i am planning on buying a new tank and a bunch of other things to make it great i really wish he would get back to his normal state
Nothing that comes to mind. It sounds like he is lacking and Vitamin A and calcium are essential for their tongue to work properly. Vitamin A assists in the production of the sticky mucus that covers their tongue and also the mucus secreted by their skin. It also assists in preventing what is known as Short Tongue Syndrome as well as calcium helping to prevent it. He may be lacking both and the supplement you're using may not be a good one for amphibians. Not all Reptile vitamin supplements work as well as others.
A good supplement to use in my opinion is repashy calcium plus. I switch back in march to this and since then my frogs have been more active, brighter looking, and just seem healthier overall. It's a calcium and multivitamin all in one, ratioed out to be used safely everyday.
I guess instead of actually adding more calcium and vitamins, it somehow enhances the insects natural values, and adds a little bit not a whole lot. I actually e-mailed Allen Repashy to see how this works and why only this supplement is safe for every feeding, and that's what he told me.
Best of luck!
I just bought some new stuff today buy hey how much was that stuff?
and hey griff i was wondering since he is not eating can i put some of the vitamin powder in his water bowl since it would go through his pores initially entering into his body?
I have not seen him eat in 2 days i have offered crickets, earthworms, etc. The climate is 80/80 at night 80/75 lowest 73 (temp) i tried to force feed him with a little butter knife but he is so small i did not want to hurt him. When i first adopted my pac man he was so feisty he would/did not eat for a month or so i got pics when i first got him he was starved so i forced feed him and i could tell he was happy now he is a champ all i can do is take advise and hope for the best i got confidence that he will be fine.
Hi Tim,
I think Grif could be right! In an adult frog, however, it looks more like they are having difficulty "catching" the food. I don't know what a Vit A deficiency looks like with regard to a very young frog?

Great , recent thread -above. There is a kink here to Frank's web site. ( w/ a great article about Vit def A )
His web site also has good information about the food etc. for the feeder bins for crickets.
ie I have been raising froglets since May 23, 2012. ( A moreletii) . I got them very young. I'm still dust daily w/ cal ( w/D0) and ReptoMulti vitamins ( w/ beta carotene) since they arrived. Keep foods high in beta carotene in the feeder bin too! ( spinach, collards, kale, sweet potato, even baby food carrots) . What do you gut load the feeders with? You could PM Frank or Dr Frye to find out for sure, as well as how to safely correct it as quickly as possible.

You guys are great thank you so much ill let you know what happens i am going to try to feed him again i guess i will see what happens.
Tim,
I use this very small kitchen spatula to force feed. It is about 7"long.
I think it is used to decorate cup cakes?
The green part is really flexible and soft! It works very nicely. ( bed bath beyond)
Flexible enough not to scrape a frogs 'lips'. ( does a frogs have lips ? )
Wrap him in dampened paper towels when you handle him for this.
It would be easier with 2 people.
It takes a little practice.
Ask Grif what the best food would be. Something easy to digest!
Oh! Good luck !

Thank you Lynn you guys have the best ideas he is soaking in the tub now i offered a earth worm he went to nip at it but unfortunately he did not grab it i put a little calcium and vitamins in his water dish just so he can absorb it but if he don't eat today tomorrow i will force feed him plus i am gonna grab him a nice big ole tank today since they are having a sale at Petco $1 a gallon so by the end of the day he should be happy
Good luck.
I hope he grabs something.
The force feeding thing is so stressful!
How often does a bull frog shed? Does it open its mouth to loosen the shed? If so, drop food in.
I used this method will an ill black eye ( A moreletii) for 7 weeks !
It works like a charm.
