Hey guys I'm wondering what kind of breeding set ups and what kind of morphs are good to have and use when setting up a breeding program? I want to set one up so that I can use my own frogs for a masters project next year. The only pacman I currently have is an ornate as well. Thank you in advance for any advice.
Get cranwelli for breeding. You can see the various morphs on my site. Www.mikesphatfrogs.weebly.com
Thanks Mike. You may be getting an order from me sometime.
Ok sounds good. I will be breeding in the next few weeks. I should have babies within two months. I sell rainchambers also. They are custom built for pacman frogs and designed by me.
Custom built pacman rainchambers would be pretty useful sense pacs are the only frogs I have interest in breeding. And I'd rather buy a rainchamber then build my own. How big are your rainchambers?
Some things to consider before you breed:
Room.....you're gonna need it......LOTS of it. After the eggs are laid and the adults are removed, they should be transferred to tubs once they are free swimming. It is better to use multiple tubs if you want to lower that mortality rate too.
Time.........again, LOTS of it. Water needs to be changed as frequently as daily depending on how quickly the water is fouled.
Food sources...........this is where it gets expensive. The tadpoles can eat you out of a paycheck!!
Market...........do you have it set up so that you can find a buyer or buyers for what you produce?
There is SO much that goes into the details of breeding these frogs and raising healthy, viable animals. As for the morphs, that is an individual choice. If you are wanting to breed for a school project, does that really matter? We breed them because it is what we do as part of our hobby & business. It will take us years to get the morphs we are looking to get since we want them to be healthy animals that don't have all the issues that many on the market do today.
Buying the rainchamber is a great thing since Mike has done the work of making one specifically for this species and it takes all the guessing out of it!
We wish you the best of luck!
The reason for the morphs is because I do have some interest in breeding them for use outside of research. Though breeding them for research is my main focus. And since I'm thinking of doing a simulated natural selection project for my masters thesis I'd like to use different different morphs. Given that is just one of the ideas for my masters thesis next year.
