Thread: Tiny Bugs In My Terrarium

Default Tiny Bugs In My Terrarium

I just noticed these tiny bugs at the base of a plant in the terrarium that houses my Amazon Milk Frogs. Are they Springtails? Do I need to be concerned? [Click the image for a video clip]

They look like springtails to me. Do they go "popping" all over the place when you get your finger close to them?

If they are springtails there is no reason to be concerned! These helpful little critters will help keep your substrate free from mold and other waste.

No they do not jump or pop when my finger gets close, I just checked. I can take another video if you think that would be helpful.

What about if you actually stir the substrate? Do they jump then? Normally springtails jump, as their name implies.

If they do not jump you should wait for someone else to identify them for you. (Someone who knows more than I :P)

Do they fly? They look light gnats.

i blow on mine to get them to jump... i dont know if that helps or not. my dwarf white isopods are pretty small too and dont jump, but they should be big enough that you can tell what they are. they will look like tiny rolly pollies...

When opened the terrarium just now a bunch of fruit files or gnats flew out! I supposed I will need to do a full cleaning. How would this happen? I spot clean almost every day, always change the water etc..

The flying bugs are most likely fungus gnats. They're completely harmless and show up in really moist enclosures.

I get gnats in mine every now and then. Make sure to clean out your substrate. They are harmless, but can be annoying if they fly into you.
