Default do frogs clean them selves? or what could this be?

hi i own an Australian white lipped tree frog, his been hibernating for about a week now just chilling on his branch, went to change his water and saw the most weirdest thing ever, he was like bloated up, sweaty, and looked like he was peeling or he had like little white string things on him and every time he would like yawn or open his mouth and the white string things would slowly go back in his mouth then he would go real skinny when the white string thing was getting closer to his mouth then soon it all was in his mouth he then was back to his normal self what could this be? was pretty scared when i saw this thank you so much ( and sorry dont have a picture was to slow to get one)

Hello sezza ( Welcome to FF )

I certainly sounds like your frog is shedding. I am sure you know a frogs skin is special; through which the frog drinks and breathes. They absorb all their needed moisture through their skin and do not swallow it to "drink". Shedding may occur, depending on the species, weekly, or as often as a few times a week. Yes, it looks bazaar! They twist , turn, yawn and pull their stomachs in . They have to stretch and contort their bodies to get out of the old skin , sometimes pulling over their head's like a sweater. Many species eat their shed which explains what you see around the corners of his mouth.

If the frogs environment is not meeting his needs ( ie temp, humidity) , or if he is ill; this could results in issues like bloating (?)and difficulty shedding.
Is he eating and pooping !

As for the bloating. I think you might post a few-everyday type- photos of him, awake, climbing and sleeping if possible.
Other FF members will come to the rescue as there are many very experienced froggers here.
You could cut, paste and answer these questions: this will move things along

As Lynn said, it's nothing to worry about. His just shedding
I know what you mean about him looking skinny, my frogs do this too, kind of like they are sucking in their tummy, haha. It's just like what Lynn said, to help them get their old skin into their mouth.

I agree I was really concerned the first time I saw Frodo all bloated up and glossy. tTen after a while he started opening his mouth and closing it like he couldn't breath. Then he began to use his legs to push the skin towards his mouth... he ate his shedding. It was gross but once I found out on here what was going on it was kinda neat. I think they make themselves swell up to stretch the skin to be shed for easier removal. But after he was done all this he looked back to normal XD I see him do this quiet often =).

I agree with the others. My grey tree frogs inflate themselves, move in weird positions, and "slurps" the skin into the corners of their mouths when they shed exactly as you have described. It freaked me out the first time I saw it, too!

Here is frogger doing just that:
