About a year ago I bought my first tarantula (australian bird eating spider selenotypus plumipes) hatchling or (1st instar) from a pet store.
They kept it with it's siblings in a large tank with sand and a bowl of water crystals.
They told me What to buy for it, what it needs to survive.. And I bought it all.. Here it goes..
10 gallon fish tank $30
20 watt UNDERTANK heater $50
Jelly water crystals $10 for a small jar
Feeding tongs $6
Shallow water bowl $9
2 kilo sand $12
Hiding log $7
And calcium powder $14
I was told that they need lots of area to walk around,
Keep the sand DRY
put the heat Matt UNDERNEATH the tank
And coat all of his crix in the powder
I set it all up for him, and I though "geez it's a HUGE tank for a tiny spider!!
So I read up on the net about how to keep them, and I realized I was RIPPED FRIGGEN OFF!!!!
I now have 4 tarantulas, and they are each kept in a tall cleaned out pickle jar with moist coco peat
And a small bottle cap with a few drops of water
They have all made webbed up tunnels and I have had them successfully molt about 5 times each and they don't need heat as I live in their natural location.
The heat Matt was put away until now as I have frogs
The tongs were put away until 2 months ago as I got a carpet python
The powder and jelly expired
And the tank is in the shed full of cobwebs and dust
