The right hand seems cut-off where it meets the frog... However, judging by the large rattlesnake tail in the background, I wonder if it's a large foam or rubber toad.

to me it looks like he was holding a large turtle/tortoise or something before they put the toad in, what ever it was had some weight behind it.
