Please help!...... How much to feed my FBT's?

Please help, I'm confused!


I have just got my FBT's today - 3 in a 60L 60/40 split setup, but am confused about how many crickets to feed. The cricks I've got are probably around 1cm or so long.

I'd read you only need to feed 3 or 4 twice a week per toad, but the shop I got them from said one toad would go through a box of crickets in a week (there must be a good 70 - 100 in a box!!) but this sounds a lot to me.


So far today, I gave them 3 each, can you recommend how many to feed (I'm told the FBT's are adult size) each toad and how often, like do they need to be fed every day, every other day, twice a week??

Also, the shop said dusting with calcium is not necessary, and don't need to supply water/bug gel as long as I gut load them with moist food like carrot and apple - is this correct?


Please help, as I now have 3 toads to look after, but the man in the shop has confused me with feeding, and I don't want to under or over feed my new little toadies!!

I have 6 FBT's that I feed every other day. I put about 4 crickets per toad in their enclosure and watch the frenzy begin. It lasts for about 15-20 minutes before most of the crickets are gone. I leave the couple of straglers in the enclosure. As far as gut loading goes... I sprinkle the supplement on the crickets once a week, but I also sprinkle the crickets food the day before feeding. Sometimes employees at the pet shops aren't the best source of information unless they keep the animals themselves.

I feed mine every other day as well. I have 3 FBTs and I put enough in there so there is 3-4 crickets each. It's awesome to watch them hoping over each other getting the crickets

i feed mine every now and then with roaches or earthworms
just dangle a squirming earthworm above it and watch it slurp it down, it will not need to eat again for a week
fully grown firebellies can go 3 weeks without food in summer and in the 11 week winter i give them i toss in a few wingless bottleflies every month and they do fine

A good rule of thumb with most frogs (frogs, not froglets) is to feed as much as they will consume in a few minutes and watch their weight for the first week or so. Provided the frogs are at a healthy weight to start out with, you'll get the hand of how much to feed quickly. Just err on the side of over-feeding in the beginning (frequency, qunatity and duration), until you're sure they're getting enough. Be sure to watch out for any one frog or frogs that seem to be getting the short end of the feeding stick. This can be common in trio-type situations where there may be an odd man (or woman) out of a pair. Good question--good luck!
