    Default New to FB Toads.

    Background story:
I've always loved frogs and toads, though I have never owned on. Recently I was away on a family trip when a friend of mine's FB toads for the first time in the many years she had them, laid eggs. My friend didn't know about it until she saw tadpoles swimming around her tank. Knowing how much I love frogs and toads she asked if I wanted some. Since there is 23 babes swimming around I have my pick of them. I'm thinking about 2-5 of them and will be picking them up this weekend.

    Now why I am posting:
I have a few questions, mostly because I have never owned a frog or toad and mostly because I always educate myself when it comes to my pets.

    1. Is there a cage size to toad ratio? I know with my guinea pigs and my turtle (Yellow Belly Slider) you need X amount of space per. I'm hoping this will give me an idea of how big of a tank I need. I currently have a 20 gallon (tall not long) sitting around but if I need to grab a bigger or smaller one that's ok.

    2. I have the information on care and breeding saved but it doesn't go into great detail on feeding tadpoles to adult hood, does anyone have any information on that?

    3. What is good substrate to use in the land area. I am going to divide the tank to 50/50. I have some moss and would love to utilize it in the tank set up.

    4. Is it ok to rehome the tadpoles before the metamorphose take place?

That's about it for now. I am still googling and reading posts in this section on them

I ve kept 3 fbts in a 10 gallon. I wouldnt put anymore then that in a 10. Im just starting back qith fbts and am in the process of setting up a 20 long i have 2 fire bellies now but plan to get more once i split off the tank for land and water. I use coco fiber with moss on top to help keep the water clean as coco fiber alone can be very messy as far as breeding goes, i have no idea.. not many people answer posts on fire belly toada(as far as i can tell ...) hope this helps some

It has been a rule of thought that keeping 3 FBT's per 10 gallons is suggested. I originally had 6 in a 10 gallon and it was quite a tight fit with plants and hides included. So I went big (55 Gallons) and they have plenty of room. I think a 20 Gallon would have worked but I took advantage of the Petco tank sale.

You can feed tadpoles on flake fish food, boiled spinich until they lose their tails. Then you should start feeding them pinhead crickets, fruit flies, small things. Then you can graduate to bigger insects as they grow.
    3. What is good substrate to use in the land area. I am going to divide the tank to 50/50. I have some moss and would love to utilize it in the tank set up.
I have a false bottom in my tank. I use coco fiber with moss, lots of plants and hiding areas.
    4. Is it ok to rehome the tadpoles before the metamorphose take place?
I would think that rehoming tadpoles would depend on your set up. If the water section is workable for tads, I would go ahead and get the tads. But if the design ends up more for the liking of adults then I would wait.

Good luck with your new ones.

    Awesome thanks.

I'm going to do a 50/50 split (land and water). That leaves the tadpoles with lots of water. I should have it set up by Sat (waiting on silicon sealant to cure right now). Sat night I get the little guys (5 in total). I had the 20 gal sitting around so yay that it can be used.

I also had some frog moss and coco fiber from the reptile show this last spring (had bought it because it was a great deal. who knew I would use it for these little guys).

I'll post photos once its all set up.

    Question:
Do I HAVE to feed fruit flies? I loath those bugs, with a passion.
