Thread: Community Tree Frog Tank

  1. #1

    Default Community Tree Frog Tank

I was thinking of setting up a 55 gallon viquarium with about 1/4 water and 3/4 land. I will heavily plant both land and water. Can I have Tree Frogs in 6 inch water? There will be a slope to get out. If so, what kind? I was thinking of American Green or Grays. Is this adequate for about 4 frogs? Any help would be appreciated.

Vietnamese Mossy Tree Frogs... LOVE water they would need a tank that is mostly water though. For mine I have the entire bottom as water and then have bamboo and other water loving plants coming up and out with a fake background.

That would be a HUGE tank for tree frogs. Usually the ratio is 10 gallons per frog, so essentially you could keep 5 in there; but American Green Tree Frogs and Grey Tree Frogs don't get that big...so you could probably keep a few more in there.

Thank you! I will probably stick to 3 or 4 American Green Tree Frogs. I want a big tank because I am planning to have a beautiful backdrop, a waterfall, and a custom fogger. Plus lots of terrestrial and aquatic plants. I am getting a TetraFauna Viquarium kit for it, so I needed it to be tall enough for Tree Frogs, but also long enough for the waterfall and water area. Also, will they be able to swim well in it?

If you have proper humidity - which American Green Tree Frogs don't require that much humidity - they probably won't be in the water that often.

Your tank sounds amazing Kat! I would love to see it when its done. You have a very big tank which is good because the more room the better for tree frogs.
Most tree frogs aren't the best swimmers but if you want to have 6" of water, make sure you have many ways for them to get out. I have a half land half water vivarium for my whites tree frogs and i filled the water part with some pebbles and when they get older, i will remove the pebbles so they have more room.

Good idea with the pebbles! I will have many ways for them to get out, so the swimming thing shouldnt be a problem. Phew! Is lighting nescesary? The windows will be open, so there will be sunlight in the room during the day. But i will provide mild heating.

Lighting is not necessary for Green Tree Frogs. However, it would probably more aesthetically pleasing. Also, if you plan on having live plants the lighting will benefit them too.

Like kitten said, there isn't really any research saying that they benefit from uv light but if you have live plants, you will need a uv light. It also brights up the viv but your choice

If you want them to have a lot of room you still could fit 5-7 frogs, I mean thats a nice huge tank! Good luck though!

Wait... you keep White's in there! Oh my gosh! I would LOVE to have White's, but from what I've heard they can't swim! Can I have White's? That would be so awesome!

You can have whites in there as long as the water isn't too deep. 6" will be too deep for them. Mine is about as deep as they are with a few higher spots for them to sit on without being 100% in the water.

You could have White's Tree Frogs in there as long as you got a lot of branches, perhaps, to stick in the water so they have places to climb out if they were to fall in the water. They are pretty feisty when they eat. Kiwi, my White's, never fails to launch himself at his food and tumble to the bottom of his enclosure of nearby branch.

Will do! Can I have three in there, or is it too small?

You could probably fit up to 4 in there if you wanted. The general rule is 10 gallons per frog, but with White's being a bit bigger I would just stick with 4.

I think I'll do 3. Do you know of a reputable source that sells adults?

I do not. I got my White's from a friend who didn't want him anymore.
