    Default Help...think Jewl has parasites.....

So for about a month now Jewl has been acting strange. when she would wake up shed lean back in sharp c shape away from the glass and open n close her mouth and eyes. (ill try and get a pic). Well she'd do it then stop for a few days and then start up again. well last night i found a worm in the tank.....now idk if it is coming from the soil...i doubt it ive only seen two in her tank. one when i first got her about 6 months ago...and one last night. Its red in color about two in long...black/brown underside. (ill post some pics of it)...if i can clear pic of a worm...:/ cud it b a parasite?? she seems to have stopped with the leaning away from the glass thing. oh and she does seem to be having trouble climbing...idk like constantly losing her grip on the glass....idk if that mean anything. she also the other night tried to go upside down on the lid of her tank..she did this in the container we brought her home in her sign shes stressed from what i can tell.... any ideas??

The posturing sounds like she's shedding, which is normal. I'm not sure about the leaning. I forget what type of frog she is. is she still eating for you? Are her stools normal or runny? A picture would be helpful. If it's a parasite she can be treated with Panacur which you can get from a vet. If you don't have a local vet Dr.Frye will help you if you're in the states. You can email him and/or call him. If you'd like his info let me know.

    Hi Savannah,
My red eyes lean back when they shed as well.
I think it's highly unlikely a 1" worm would come from your frog.
I'm not saying this is impossibly- but highly unlikely.

If your frog is eating and not loosing weight , then that would point to the fact that the 'worm' is a worm from a plant?
They sneak their way in w/ a plant.
Like Heather said, keep an eye on the poops.
Diarrhea and slimy (mucous) looking poop needs the vet's attention.

The day-to-day observation of things is so important. Once a red eyed tree frog looks sick and is acting odd ......it's really sick.
(ie wt loss, inactive, difficulty righting itself, not eating , change in behavior, slipping down the glass -unable to hold on) These things just do not happen overnight!

I am sorry to hear about your frog acting strange. From my own personal experience I would suggest getting her stool checked by Dr Frye. I have heard so many good things about him on these forums.
This year I lost a chameleon. It was my first time owning one and the pet store gave me one with parasites. When I went back and told them about her eating problems two months later they never advised me to an exotic doctor or to have her checked out. I trusted their advice that it was just a behavioral thing. after a few months she started eating less and less but never lost weight (she was bloated). I brought her in and had them look at her and they said she was fine. I should have had her stool checked out because a few months later she fell and died from broke ribs because she was so weak from the parasites that she couldnt hold on to her branches. I only had her for 8 months.
It was a hard lesson to learn because I had to watch her slowly and painfully die. I still think about her every day and regret not knowing about the signs of parasites.
I hope that you at least get the stool checked out.

They usually eat their sheds or they often slough the rest of the way off when they soak. They will open their eyes wide and then close them tight and open their mouths wide like they're yawning when they shed to stretch the skin off.

A stool sample testing is a good idea. The vet can easily identify any parasites that way. Most can be treated with metronidazole drops and/or panacur dewormer. How does her skin look?

I think around $20, but I'm not positive. I'd call ahead though just in case.

    Hi Savannah,
If possible, could you post a pic of your frog sleeping and awake just and hanging out?
Have you spoken to Dr Frye?
Your frog looks thin. However , they look thinner then they really are when the shed.
It looks like a shed. He might be turning to get the skin loose?

    How is the humidity level?

Try and keep the temp at least 75 degrees. 60 is chilly for them. Have you seen any of her stools? What do they look like?
