What are the brand names for the expanding foam you've all used with success when forming backgrounds? Anything to look out for before I get confused in the aisle of Lowes. Thanks.![]()
Many people use "Great Stuff". It's yellow in color so most also use brown colored silicone to seal it to cover the yellow. I have also used pond foam by Tetra which is black.

TY... Yes, knew of GStuff. Trying to get a list of all foam and sealants used together. Does GS leach on its own or must it ne completely sealed? I've used it b4 and just pressed coco fiber into it as it cured. That was for a flora-only terrarium. I'm worried of chemicals if I add amphibs.
I just recently bought GS gaps and cracks. There is a certain type of sealant that I got from home depot that I was recommended from a friend who makes backgrounds for his PDF. here is the product info for the safe silicone sealant: DAP 8642 is the color (black) the product code is 575092
I still havent started my project, I will be starting it this week when I get a polystyrene board. Have fun and good luck!
I do not believe there is anything that could leach out into a viv and disturb the inhabitants from the Great Stuff product. Most keepers I know cover the GS with GE Silicone II Window and Door and put the substrate to that. I never did it to the GS Foam since I let it completely cure then sculpt in the cracks, shelves, planting locations and such since the GS expands, then silicone the whole thing and cover and press in the substrates.
