That depends, from what I hear they bite, and hard.

If you want a turtle you can handle easily get a Slider. Females get big so keep that in mind. Also keep in mind that to buy a total new set up your looking at a few hundred dollars, if you savvy. They need a min of 75 gallons, 100+ if you want two. You need a basking area out of the water, UVB and UVA/basking lamps and so much more (Filter(s), heater and so on).

get a map turtle. they stay relatively small.
snapping turtles seem cool until someone looses a hand... then its just funny.

I don't like aquatic turtles but the smaller species of the soft shell are cool (can't think of the name)

Remember, if you get a turtle you MUST provide a UVB bulb. UVB bulbs MUST be replaced every six months. After six months they stop outputting sufficient amounts of UVB. Also, if you get a map turtle water conditions must be perfect, otherwise they start to suffer. Sliders & painted turtles are more forgiving when it comes to water quality, but still require a UVB basking area.

Snapping turtles are not good beginner turtles. They require a ton of room, lots of food, and lots of water changes (they are very very messy & stinky). You would have to have a massive tank to accomodate a full grown alligator snapping turtle.
