Most everywhere says that the substrate depth should be maybe 2 to 3 inches, but I'm wondering if there needs to be some variance according to the size of the frog. Would you have it the same depth for a baby as you would for an adult? Does it need to be deep enough for the frog to be able to burrow entirely under it or no?
thinking from a frogs perspective I would make the substrate deeper as the frog gets bigger. 2-3 inches sounds good for a baby in a critter keeper through a ten gallon tank. right now I have my 1 year old pacman in a ten gallon tank with the substrate 4 inches deep and my 9 month old giant african bullfrog is in a 20 gallon tank with substrate at a depth of 5 inches.
You only need to place enough substrate in the enclosure that allows the frog to cover itself all the way if it wants. Babies only need 1.5" to 2" juveniles 2" to 3" adults should have 3" to 4". You don't want to place so much in there incase you need to find the frog. They only need deep substrate for aestivation and brumation periods.
Thanks very much. His substrate isn't quite deep enough for him to cover himself all the way if he should so choose. I think I'll add a little bit more.
