I have had my toadlet since it was a tad. I brought it home on May 6, and it came out of the water on May 28. Before yesterday, I kept it in a medium pet carrier tank with a pair of panty hoes over the top to prevent fruit flies from escaping. It had a pretty decent appetite up until a week ago...it usually finished every last fruit fly, and I kept plenty in there. Once I noticed it seemed harder for him to catch them, I decided it was time for some bigger food. I got an assortment of small crickets ranging in size of smallness. I put a few in his tank, and he ate two along with a small red runner that got mixed in. I was surprised at the size of the crickets he ate! Definitely wasn't expecting him to fit the big ones in his mouth! So he looked pretty full after this...he had a huge meal! So I decided to put him in the 10 gallon with coconut fiber and organic potting soil mixed substrate. He immediately burried himself! I looked bellow the tank and I can seem his little belly chilling on the bottom. He is only the size of a quarter. I plan on feeding him in a separate container so the crickets aren't roaming free and so he doesn't accidentally ingest some substrate. So my question is...how long should I expect to wait before seeing him again? I obviously am not going to dig for him...he'll come out when he is hungry, right?
Your toadlet will come out if he hears dinner roaming around. How deep is the substrate? You don't want it to be too deep for a young toadlet. Toads burrow it's part of their nature and come out at night to hunt for food. You can make it deeper as he gets bigger. Good luck with your toadlet.

Toads love to burrow. He's just being his happy self![]()
Hi, I waited a day and ended up digging him up. I wasn't sure if he was ready for the substrate since he still needs to eat every day. So now he is in the 10 gallon with damp unbleached paper towels with plenty of hides.
The toadlet will be fine burried. Mine do it and come out at night to eat from the small dish they have, plus I have red runners roaming in the tank also since they LOVE to hunt them down. Some times it seems like they are staying down for days, but none of them are thin so I take that as they are doing fine. Plus I find tons of poop in the morning that I clean daily from the tank. I don't feed crickets since the crickets can bite the toads when they are resting or partially buried in the substrate. I also started to feed wax worms, but just a few a week, they are high in fat.
