Default Anyone use a substrate conditioner/additive/Bio Earth?

I was looking in the bargain bin and noticed Nature Zone's Bio Earth for a buck so I picked it up. It is a water/substrate additive that is essentially small black charcolish rock that prevents bacterial growth/smell/cleans. Anyone use this and/or input?
