sent in a few fecals to dr frye and they called saying it was the most hookworms they have ever seen in a single examination. My girlfriend was on the phone with them since she had already done the credit card over the phone to pay. They were telling her what to do to and talking to her about the medicine and everything but one thing hit me the wrong way. They said to do the 10:1 water/bleach ratio and to spray their paper towels down with them. that it would kill the hookworms. Im no expert but every time i read about bleaching to clean i hear RINSE RINSE RINSE. but in this case they said to leave it in there? I called back to see if she may of misunderstood because i wanted to be DEFINITELY POSITIVE before i put my frogs anywhere near bleach. She said the lady that my girlfriend talked to is out for lunch and i could email Dr Frye. I have emailed him and Im still waiting on a response. I just wanted some opinions. maybe my girlfriend misunderstood? maybe it wont hurt the frogs? i had a dog that had heart worms and they gave him cyanide to kill the heart worms which almost killed him but did kill the heart worms in the process. so im not sure...
also. i have a potted pothos in there. and a piece of driftwood. im thinking of throwing them both away. maybe bleaching them and putting them in the trashcan so i dont pass the disease around. unless yall think otherwise? it would be no problem for me to buy a fresh piece of driftwood once all the hookworms are gone and put it in the viv. same goes for the plant.
vet said we will have to treat them for months. even treat them after they show no signs of hookworms because they can show up a few fecals later. so after all is said and done can i get rid of all of them?
im sorry to hear that. The bleach ratio seems fine but I agree with your skepticism about using it on the frog. I cant imagine what kind of damage bleach would do to a delicate creature.
It seems very weird that both your frog and dog had hookworms. Did you disinfect the driftwood? most hookworms like sandy soils and thats where you usually find driftwood.
no my dog had heart worms. i was referring to poisoning the animal to get rid of the bugs but not kill the animal. they gave him cyanide to kill the heart worms. kind of the same as giving bleach to my frog. that was an old dog from probably 10 years ago.
im almost positive the hookworms came from the frog. i bought him from a dealer who already has something posted on this site about their frogs dying. i will not name the dealer in this post because its not in the right section. but they red eyes are field collected and i didnt realize it when i had purchased my frogs.

heres my plan. they are in a sterilite tub right now. a 30gallon one. im going to buy 1 more tub. then i will sterilize it. put fresh paper towels down. sterilize their water bowl. and put them in there. while they are in there i will sterilize the tank they are in now. so they will be in a clean tank and have a clean tank waiting on them to be switched back into.
i will put their medicine on them and keep them in the new sterilite tub for a week. after one week i will put medicine on them again (assuming i should apply the medicine once a week), after i put the medicine on them i will move them back to their old sterilized tank. keep them in there for a week and clean the water bowl and put fresh paper towels. then keep switching them back and forth between tanks, sterilizing each time. and i wont use and plants or anything. they can just hang out on the walls and be fine.
after 4 weeks and after all their medicine is gone, i will send in more fecal examinations and see if i have killed some of the population of hook worms and keep on with the process from ther. but they will be switched into a sterilized tank with NOTHING but moist papertowels and a water dish every week. any advice on cheap stuff i can put inside the tank that i can throw away each week? so its not totally bare inside the tank. the male doesnt even sleep on the walls and its gonna kill me if he sleeps on the floor...
the problem as the pothos will get infected with hookworms every time its in the tank. so instead of cleaning every single time and risking the cleaning not working, i just wont put one in there. im actually going to buy a third tank and rotate them into a new sterilized tank every day to cut the risk of reinfection through feces and eggs on the walls.
this all sounds like a lot of work. I hope I never had to go through this. how many of your frogs are infected?
2 red eyes. yeah its going to suck. i gotta throw away everything. and have 3 sterlite containers for them. every day i will have to clean and disinfect one. and keep rotating them every day in between the two. and disenfect the water dish and feeding bowl. but i will do whatever it takes to have healthy and happy frogs. they will poop every day so its best to put them in a clean tank every time. it will reduce the chance of them getting reinfected. i have a lot of confidence that i can get these frogs back to tip top shape. and now i have learned my lesson from buying field collected frogs off website. even though i didnt know when i bought it. i will do my research next time. and never introduce frogs to each other without getting fecal examinations done. because i got my frogs from 2 different places and im sure only 1 of them had them...now both of them do. LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES PEOPLE!!!!!! lol
I am sure you'll get them back to healthy soon Mrzogogs.
As for the bleach, yeah sounds odd to me. What meds are they sending? I may have missed that above.
1.0.0 Red Eyed Leaf/ Frog - Agalychnis callidryas
1.1.1 Bumblebee Dart Frog - Dendrobates leucomelas

1.1.0 - Dendrobates tinctorius - Powder Blue
1.1.0 - Ranitomeya vanzolinii
A 1 to 10 ratio is for disinfecting your tank. It would kill your frogs causing chemical burns and going out syndrome of the severe kind. She had to have heard wrong. Definitely do not put bleach anywhere near your frogs.
yeah she misunderstood. i called the lady back and she said to not put bleach on the paper towels. i knew better than to do that anyways. girlfriend misunderstood. i have 3 tanks now and i will be switching them into a new sterile tank EVERY day. with fresh paper towels and a sterile water dish. i will dust the medicine on their crickets once a week as directed and send in another fecal sample in 1 month. then continue with treatment until they are all gone. once there are no signs of hookworms i will still continue the treatment and sanatizing of tanks for a month or more to assure they are all gone.
they are sending my 2 things of panacur. enough to last a long time.
