Default Found a new friend, what sex and species is it?

About a week ago I opened my door late at night and I had a visitor right on my doorstep. I decided to take him in and he's been doing very well. I was just wondering if anyone might be able to sex him (or her) and if anyone knows what species it might be?

It looks like a toad to me american or canadian is the question. thats about all I can elaborate on. I live in CA so the western toads here are more of a dark green and brown. someone on this forum will know the scientific name for this cute little guy.

It's female b/c the line from the nose to the mouth is curved. If the line from the nose to the mouth is curved or vertical, it is female. If the line is slope, it is male. Also, if the toad calls/sings when you hold it between the tips of your first two fingers, it is male (release call).

What you can look for is on the two inner most fingers, they will have a thick brown coating (nuptial pads). Since that toad is clearly an adult, that would be the easiest way to sex the frog.

    Nuptial pads disappear in summer.
