I can't really speak to the specifics of pac man frogs, but generally speaking, things are worth as much as people are willing to pay for them. I imagine part of what you're paying for when buying from a reputable breeder is the breeder's expertise, knowing the frog has been well cared for and is in good health, knowing who its parents are, knowing its history, sometimes the rarity of its coloring, etc. You can often buy a cheap Pacman from a pet store, but they don't generally even know how old their dang frogs are (let alone any of the other stuff I mentioned), and they're often in poor health too. I suppose prices might eventually drop if everyone were to stop buying the frogs at high prices, but an immense drop in price might end up putting the good breeders out of business, and that wouldn't be a positive thing for any of us.
